Maybe it has to do with the context of the sentence.  Here's some examples where one would be used over the other.  "Who did you get as a singer in your new band?" ,  "I play bass and do background vocals",  "Alright lads,  we've got the instrument tracks recorded,  let's put down the vocals."  Man,  the new singer in my band is a flaming *$@^&*(_*!!!"

Who cares?  Look on credits of most albums and if it lists it, it will say "Vocalist" not singer or singist.

Welcome to he English language.

Vocalist has a Latin/old French origin, whereas Singer is Germanic.

Both correct. Vocalist has some traction as a singing descriptor in French music, including plainsong. But as voca is voice rather than speech it’s often used in French and Latin for sung word rather than spoken word.

Well I think that the discussion has ultimately gleaned that the person doing the singing is the singer , but then I knew that all along !

Tbf the bands I know of with percussion have an actual percussionist, and a drummer, lol.

In our band, I play drums and the singer/vocalist plays percussion (claves, cowbell...) and vocalises the trombone solo for 'Beds are burning'.
