Slightly confused: a 72 would be a poly finish so was it stripped and re-done with a nitro refinish?

The wear is definitely different to the wear on nitro, the wear is less smooth and a little more chipped but certainly looks very good, this is what’s under the pickguard

Mon dieu! C’est belle.

My yob is ‘75. I already sold my soul in the early 90s, but I can’t remember what for.

In lieu of standard supernatural currency I’ll trade a kidney and/or lung. Any takers?

Only thing which comes close is spitfire, but for the cost of one of those yo may as well seek out a vintage one.

Which is exactly what I did a couple of years back, seek out an original that is. Took a while but a contact came up with one. My wife thought I had lost the plot, "paying all that for a bit of old plastic"

Since sold the bass but now have another slightly older model and once again, with the most lovely tort guard.

And as good as spitfire are compared to all other modern tort, it’s still not a patch on the old stuff.

is the tort pickguard an art form lost to time or can no one be bothered to put the effort in?

If a guitar manufacturer was to start producing guitars with real quality tort like the 60s and 70s as it should be done it would certainly set them apart!!!

Anyone care to estimate how many hours playing it must have taken to get the buckle-rash result that this beauty has - and all natural. No botox used here!!!

Love the black blocks and binding too!!

Might have been an owner who had a massive spikey belt buckle...

There's poly and then there's poly. And strictly speaking there's no such thing as a poly finish really..

The Urethane coatings fender started using in the mid to late 60's and into the early 70's are very very different to the finishes you get nowadays, and especially on the classic thick Japanese 'poly' finish from the 80's and 90's.

Fender wouldn't have used the finish used on this one after the Fullerton plant closed in the early 80's - but I've seen plenty for which the wear, checking, shrinking, chipping and scraping can be just like this one.

That's interesting - mine is a 1970 and so technically the era of the poly 'thick skin' finish. But it's thin and with lots of chips on it and a patch of wear just like that one on the back.

You can pick it off with your thumbnail and it seems to have come off where the rubber of a guitar stand cradle rests on it too.

Its not nitro but nowt like modern poly finishes either.

Importantly it looks cool ha ha

Since I’m trying a few tapewound strings out I thought I’d shield the cavities since I will be losing out on the grounding, once she’s in pieces there some interesting photos of the wear.

Dead jealous in Swindon!!!!!

She is a beauty, here she is with her nicely cleaned pickguard back in place, I don’t think it had been wiped down for 46 years 😳

Nice. My 72 was originally a very battered sunburst, but I stripped and oiled it in the 80s well before 'relic' was the thing to have. Wish I hadn't now, but there it is. Fortunately, the body has a reasonable grain, so it doesn't look too bad. Plays wonderfully, as I've no doubt yours does.
