I’ve never liked Tort on black basses before, something just didn’t seem right. However after a bit of bass in bass out upgrading downgrading nonsense, I ended up with a 1969 Tort pickguard.

I strapped it to a bit of ply to stop it from shrinking as the only bass I had to put it on is a black USA Geddy Lee Jazz bass, and not liking Tort on black I never thought to give it a go.

however!

tonight I thought “sod it, let’s give it a go”, and all of a sudden I love Tort on black 😁

Yeah that looks pretty tasty actually! I think for me it has to be the 'right' tort. Too orangey our light red doesn't look good to me. I do like the dark brown and the red you have. Especially that satin/worn look rather than brand new and shiny!

Now, where's my spare plate gone I can try out again heh!

That looks great  loving the neck too

I must say that the necks on these USA Geddy Lees Jazz basses are superb...

Like the way you’ve rubbed the brown shoe polish into the white edges of the Tort to relic it up properly ...  :P

My Cort GB35 with Wilkinson bridge and pickups looks alright. 15327822918277257416797613524641.thumb.jpg.abe997e3e1a7520bf23d879d7d211e59.jpg

Yeah the pearloid looks OK there against the dark board rather than maple, but then it commits the crime of having rear routed pots but a scratch plate with no control plate!

That said one of the best basses I ever played was the same, an Xotic jazz.

That's a pretty bit of tort, there. And does indeed work well with black and maple. Like discreet said, i think most modern torts don't seem to have that 'thing" going on like yours does.

That’s pretty much exactly what I’m about to have made for me by Mike Walsh 😂

I had a black strat with white scratch plate, most boring looking guitar ever, looked so much better with tort.

Tort looks good on pretty much everything apart from blues and greens.

Totally agree, tort on shell pink is the ultimate combo.
