Just been reading up on the old Genz Benz shuttlemax series, and specifically the max  amps, becuase they have 2 independant preamps, which is very handy.

Here's the crux of the biscuit -  the 12.2 max ( and the earlier 12 max )   not only have 2 independant preamps but 2 independant power amps.  Now,... if you only use 1  cab ,  you get reduced wattage. 1 x  8 ohm cab = 375 watts. 1 x 4 ohm cab = 600 watts.  These watts double if using  2 cabs of equal ohmage

Now then - the 9.2 max ( there is no earlier 9 max )  still has 2 independant preamps, but  not 2 power amps.  So  running 1 x  8 ohm cab = 500 watts and 1 x 4 ohm cab = 900 watts.

I dont see the point of the 12 and 12.2  max amps  having their power amps independant. ?

Yes but if you're a one cab person, then the 12 and 12.2  makes no sense.  Reduced wattage compared to the 9.2.  with a one cab rig

Why not make the 12 and 12.2  full wattage whether one cab or two ? You can always play with the volume if you dont want all that power.  I dont see any advantage in reducing watts when running a single cab

How many 1200watt 4 ohm cabs are on the market?

You can have two 4 ohm cabs and use just one at 600watt or use two for bigger gigs.

Genz made 600watt 4 ohm cabs at the time remember.

Very true -  just seems odd if you use one cab, you get less wattage than the cheaper  9.2.   125 watts is not much i grant you, but still

I think the 12.2 running two noexT 2x12 cabs would be fairly massive.

I've got a 3.0,  a 6.0 and a 9.2 Shuttle max, the 600 is plenty to be fair when used with a four ohm cab. I've even used the 3.0 with the big cab and it's enough for any gig really.

One cab, great sound, 1200W at 4ohms. Job done :)

With the 12.2 you could run two of those together which even with the reduced wattage to 600 per cab the total 1200 Watts through twice as many speakers would be epic compared to a single cab being driven off the 900 head or even an equivalent 1200 watt amp.

What we really wanted was an 18.2 with two of the 900 watt power stages, 1800 Watts into two 4 ohm 8x10s, that would get the pub rocking!

Well a couple of amp makers (with kinda equivalent standing in their home territories?) would get you there: Carvin and Ashdown if that's what you're after. Both have provided 2000W amps.

Are you simply trying to be louder than the Big Bang? :)

I have been using the shuttlemax 9.2 for a good few years into a fearful 15/6/1 and it's been as solid as a rock.

It's a very versatile amp with the 12ax7 tube pre etc, however I did change the valve for a ruby tube to get it breakup a little earlier which worked a treat.

One point that hasn’t been mentioned is that if one of the power amps fail on a gig you’d still be able to use the second power amp. So you would have a spare amp in the same box if needs be 🙂
