Kip Kersey
Can anyone recommend a decent reasonably priced fretless bass please?
AndyTravis
Used squier vmj or the Harley Benton equivalent
Kip Kersey
Thanks for your quick reply.... Do you think the HB's are decent? What would your preference be between HB's and VMJ?
T-Bay
My wife got me an Ibanez for Christmas last year. It’s there bottom of the range Gio model so I didn’t expect a great deal but I am amazed by how good it is. Fit isn’t the standard of the better models but it sounds great. I put some flats on and I love it.

The VMJ’s are lovely for the money though
Kip Kersey
I do have a fretted vmy p/j, perhaps I could pay for a conversion. It might end up costing the same in the end.
Kip Kersey
I know it's a bit ridiculous but I'm just not that keen on the look of recent ibanez basses. I used to have a precision style roadstar bass and that was very nice.
Happy Jack
In truth, if it's your first-ever fretless then it doesn't matter much what you buy so long as it's cheap. At best, it's a 50/50 whether or not you like it enough to keep playing fretless. I certainly wouldn't think in terms of messing about with a decent fretted bass. A very quick eBay search turned up: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Squier-jazz-bass-fretless/163194746006?hash=item25ff2a3496:g:JrAAAOSwXVNbbMvf https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stagg-BC300-NS-Fretless-Fusion-Bass-Guitar-Natural/232886336485?epid=2256060733&hash=item36391b7be5:g:Rg4AAOSw1m5bI7RM https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Fretless-Jazz-Bass-Custom/173470790738?hash=item2863aa3452:g:VB4AAOSwd8ZbRIhW Any of those three will be enough to get you started, and if you decide that fretless is not for you then you won't take a bath on the resale value. Cat Burrito
I recently picked up the Squier VM P-bass which is stunning. It's lined which I'm on the fence about but the build quality is exceptional. I owned a couple of high end Squiers in the past, which were my only basses for about 3yrs and this one is equally brilliant. Tonally, feel, weight etc - I can't fault it. Kip Kersey
Sorry, the heading of this post is a bit mis leading. I've played fretless before but I had a friends upside down, converted sanyo bass collection. Although it gave me a good idea of playing fretless bass it didn't give me much in terms of what I would go out and buy.
Kip Kersey
Also rather embarrassingly I thought I'd posted this in a left handed forum.
