Take a look at this:

I have a similar Lull and it's just a great bass - I will never get rid of it.

I keep looking at that too.

I do wonder why it's hanging around though. It's been on the site for at least a year.

Still - everything about that is right for me... apart from the money! :D

No doubt it's expensive; mine cost me £1700 a few years back before the £ when t£ts up. Not sure I would have paid 2500 for a super jazz then (unless it said Sadowsky on it), but since owning a Lull I think they're well worth the money...

The Pensa-Suhr that Victor Bailey used: https://www.skinnerinc.com/auctions/3007B/lots/34

Sold for U$D 10 455. Can be seen at: http://rudysmusic.com/used-vintage-soho-nz/vintage-pensa-suhr-koa-jazz-bass

Modulus Graphite Bassstar. Non-US could be Status T-bass or J and Japanese makers may have something special there, someone already said moon. German, French, Italian makers like Meridian (and Funk-u-lator and Syntave but not Vimana)...

To my surprise, thread is the first I’ve heard of Pensa. I must say I like the headstock - kind of a sharper version of Lakland/Xotic. Looks pretty wide at the nut but I presume those details can be customised at will.

Rudy Pensa (used to be Pensa/Shur) can make anything you want. as long as its a Jazz Bass. But expect to pay over Alleva Coppollo prices for this sort of spec.  This is a fabulously over the top bling Jazz Bass...Custom wound (for Rudy) Nordstrand single coils, with a Pensa custom 3 band preamp. Active/Passive.. Good lord.!! A  snitch over £6000. Thats nearly double the cost of my Sei Jazz with its top spec if you were to order one now new.I just wouldn't take it out of the house..

So I’ve pretty much decided I’m getting a Sadowsky. A new NYC Satin is doable with my budget, but has anyone ordered direct from Sadowsky? I’ve a feeling I’d get stung by the gentlemen at Her Majesty’s Customs.

YOu will be. And Roger won't lie about the value as it won't be insured properly if that happens.

Vat will be applied to the bass price and the shipping. Then there's import too.

Assume about 25% on top of the cost of the bass to cover all of that.

Don't risk not paying it on something like that - Customs can confiscate and destroy it.

Thanks for the heads up. I thought as much. So I can assume that if I buy from a UK Sadowsky dealer like Bass Direct they will have priced accordingly to take Customs into account?

Apparently Sadowsky has split the ranges between dealers. I'm not sure about Bass Direct (but they are a dealer), the Bass Gallery only handles NYC basses and Guitar Guitar Metro basses. I believe Thoman does them all.

If you can buy the bass from a dealer here you might not be troubled by HMRC. Email Sadowsly to ask who is the dealer for the series you want.

Bass Direct state on their website that they can take custom orders from the US shop, so they would be my first port of call. Guitar Guitar also have a few NYC Satin basses. Every NYC I see on the Gallery site is pre-owned. Mostly they deal with the Metroline series. You might be able to put a custom order through though.

I think by the look of the Satin prices on Guitar Guitar they have added (and of course, they should) the HMRC another costs to the final price.

I think my best bet is to buy in the UK second hand. Wonder if I can find a 5 string PJ fretless...

I got a used NYC five string for the same price as a new Metro from Bass Direct so you can get them second hand for a much more attractive price. They also crop up on the Marketplace here as well. Great basses.

You're right they've split the ranges.

I know Guitar Guitar does Metro and Satin Deluxe. Camden store has a beautiful deluxe currently on show.

Bass Direct don't handle Satin, but do deal with Satin Deluxe orders and beyond.

Edit: - spoke with Sadowsky.

Satin range only available direct from them in USA. A shame as import tax defeats the price point.

They are however selling Satin Deluxe through UK dealers.

I have a Chris McIntyre Jazz bass, made in Edinburgh, it is incredibly good. I wanted a custom string spacing and nut width, and a lot of the other custom builders charge a lot of money for things like that. I'm not really interested in fancy woods and finishes (though Chris can do that too), and it is (in my opinion) the nicest Jazz I've played.
