ikay
Can anyone recommend someone who specializes in vintage pickup rewinds? (I have an old Hofner staple pickup with weak output that needs attention) Most of the ones I've found by Googling (Creamery, MOJO and others) aren't taking in rewind work at the moment due to having big backlogs of repair work. Looking at the cost of rewinds (seems to be around £80-90 for two humbucker coils - ouch) it would be cheaper to buy a replacement but I'd prefer to retain the original mojo if possible. Any suggestion appreciated. Cheers Edited September 2, 2018 by ikay
Whyfretaboutit?
I recently had a pair of ghost pickups on my 64 violin bass rewound by Ash Scot-Lockyer at Oil City pickups. He was very knowledgeable about the common issues with Hofner pickups from this period. His charges were I felt very reasonable and the service I received was very prompt. ikay
Thanks for that. I eventually had mine rewound by Alex Exley at projectguitarparts.co.uk (good job and very reasonable rates) but it's always useful to know of people with specialist knowledge of these things. MoonBassAlpha
I think it might be the case with these pickups that it is the hook up wires are soldered to the coils with an aggressive flux that corrodes after many years. This could make it a simpler repair (hence cheaper), but I may have just dreamt all this up, I really can't remember where I got that nugget of info from. No, you are absolutely correct - I know ash from oil city pretty well and he has said this before..
