Dying a fretboard

Has anyone ever dyed a fretboard? The reason I ask is I like the look of a dark rosewood or ebony board and am considering dying the fretboard of my P-bass with an ebony dye. My main concern is, will the dye wear off and the fretboard look patchy?

Hi yes I have and I’m staining another next week Ebony  ,the strain or dye will have to be sealed after with a light oil.  I used danish oil  here’s mine drying off

Thanks for the reply. What do you do about the dot inlays? Mask them off or work around them?

I used a water based stain and wiped them off with a cotton bud and they came out ok but I did mask the edge of the fretboard
