Stefanogregori
Hi all, Just slapped on a set of Chromes on a p bass. I like the tone but wow, they burn when you slide up/down the fretboard! I read these were smooth strings. Is this just me??
fleabag
I've never had that problem with any flatwounds.
gary mac
Always found them very smooth and slinky. Maybe higher tension than what you're used to.
Muzz
I have had them on a couple of basses, never had that problem. One thing I did notice is they don't like being taken off and put on again much; I snapped a couple when relocating them...
gary mac
Chromes are best not cut down in length when fitting, it might look like too many winds on the post but it's most certainly the best way to do it. They are also more likely to survive a few taking offs and putting back on again.
Delberthot
I always cut all of my strings when fitting regardless of construction and haven't had one fail on me yet. This was including the E string having a Detuner to take it down to D. I can't say that I noticed any issues with Chromes when I used them. They are about as smooth as they come
D'Addario UK
Hi, they should be very smooth as it is essentially 'ribbon' wound. They should not be rough or sharp at all, please send me a picture and let me know if they are sharp. Thanks, Adam.
wateroftyne
Give them a good rub down with an old cotton t-shirt . See if that helps.
Maude
Chromes feel a bit 'grippy' at first but just play through that and they'll soon feel slick. Possibly a coating to stop oxidisation before use.
Stefanogregori
Thanks for all responses. They definitely don't feel sharp, and they are smooth to the touch. They just seem to have some sort of friction when sliding up and down the fretboard. Guess i could just be pushing down too hard but never had the same issue with rounds. Maybe they just feel different to what I'm used to and I need to give them some time to settle in. Will also try the rag tip. Cheers

CameronJ
The grippy, friction burning feeling goes away with a bit of playing time. I went through a similar phase with my Labella Black Nylon Tapes and Dunlop Flats at first but now they feel great.
