alexa3020
So, I caught a bit of the mercury music prize last night. It’s the first time I’ve heard any of the Arctic monkeys latest stuff and I really quite like it - I do know it’s not to everyone’s taste though! Anyway, I really like the bass sound on the track they played and was wondering if anyone knew how to get that. To me it sounds like he might be playing with a mute and some sort of effect - almost like an Echo Any thoughts? thanks
Old Man Riva
Really like that - shades of Richard Hawley. Lyrically, Alex Turner has got a lovely turn of phrase about him. With regards to the bass, my guess would be flat wounds played with a pick with strings muted with the side of the palm. It helps that it’s a really lyrical line so the tone really comes through - too many notes and it wouldn’t sound anywhere near as good. Good band. James Nada
It's a lovely bass sound on that album. A Burns Sonic I believe. According to Wikipedia, the bass parts were played by Alex Turner on a number of tracks.
AntLockyer
I thought that was a bizarre mishmash. I'll listen to the album though, not liked anything they've done since the debut. That record was amazing.
Planemo
Funnily enough I printed off the tab to Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino only yesterday, I think its a cracking bassline. I put it in my newly aquired tab folder (best use of Poundland I have ever had) along with a few other tabs from various musicians which have struck a good feeling in me. Not got a hope in hell of playing any of them yet, I am still practising walking up and down my frets one by one, trying to get each of my fingers to go where my eyes actually want them to, but hey I think its good to have something to aspire to. I do try learning them a little to break up the monotony of learning scales, string velocities and note locations though! Edit: and I assume you know that the video you embedded isnt tranquility base?! Edited September 22, 2018 by Planemo
alexa3020
Ha! Yeah, I was actually referring to the lp. I’ve heard a few tracks and the bass sound & style is pretty similar on the tracks I’ve heard. im surprised Alex Turner played the bass, although I think I read that it was originally gonna be a solo record. Makes sense as it’s so different to anything they’ve done before
