Andy Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Can anyone recommend a luthier in the south-east to restore and (sympathetically) refinish a pre CBS Jazz bass please? Quote
ikay Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Not in the south-east, but Clive Brown in Ripon is a renowned master of sympathetic pre-CBS restoration. The body of my '57 Precision below was done by Clive (neck left untouched). I don't think he has a website but drop me a PM me if you'd like his contact details. Quote

donslow Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 (edited) @ikay Apologies for hijacking this thread but I’m in the middle of building a slab body version of one of those basses, could kindly tell me at all what thickness the body is please?! I’m currently working off of 42mm but am unsure if this is completely correct thanks in advance Edited September 24, 2018 by donslow Quote
ikay Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Just measured mine which is 41.4mm or 1.63 inches (including the finish). Fender measurements would have been imperial so I think the nominal body thickness spec is probably 1 5/8" (1.625). There will likely be slight variations on this due to the hand work required in those days but 1 5/8" would be my starting point. Quote
donslow Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 That’s perfect! Thankyou ever so much for that! Quote

Steve Browning Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Graham Wheeler, who can be found one day a week at GAK in Brighton. His workshop is just outside Worthing. Quote
Owen Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 I am honestly not sure where he is. I know he has moved within the last year. http://www.bravewoodguitars.co.uk/page7.html Quote

Owen Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 You hadn't thought of it? Pre CBS restorations are THE BEST! Quote
