I recently went to my local guitar store to try out an American Fender P Bass ... the first thing that struck me was ooft that's some neck dive ...the sales guy was messing about with the amp as I sat .. I couldn't help myself and mentioned to the sales guy that the neck was diving ...he gave me one of the most disgusting looks ever ..it was as if I had plopped in his handbag look .. He then proceeds to tell me that all P Bass s have neck dive ...I tend not to believe a word these creatures tell me as its their job to sell sell sell ...(unless your lucky enough to have a wee independent store where your needs are what really matter) ... Cheers in advance ...probably a daft question but I simply don't know the answer ... I have never played one with neck dive, and due to their shape I imagine that only the very lightest ones could potentially have neck dive... so that sales guy is talking pish, in my opinion. Go elsewhere and try other Precisions.
el borracho
On 28/09/2018 at 14:21, Lozz196 said: Some of the MIJs are made of basswood, which generally is lighter than alder or ash, and can account for the neck-dive. You could be right there. The only one of my P basses with neck dive is the 95 MIJ 62 reissue, complete with basswood body. The neck makes a difference as well. My Tokai now has a USA neck & balances fine. With the original (admittedly rather chunky) Tokai neck it dived quite badly. In fact I don't know why I still refer to it as a Tokai as it has no surviving Tokai parts 😁 - Triggers broom! I also once found that a Hipshot Detuner induced neck dive in a previously well balanced bass, so yes lightweight tuners could help.
PaulWarning
something like this could be the answer https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adhesive-Wheel-Balance-Weights-Strips/dp/B004UADSZA
bigjohn
I haven't played a P with neck dive and I've owned 4 or 5 and played countless others. I have a Cowpoke which is supposed to have a 36" scale neck with an old P neck on and that's really well balanced. I can balance it on one finger under the heel.
