Ruck
So without resorting to active pickups and pre-amp, what combination of pickup and bass strings out there will give a naturally massive low end, big output yet also have bright highs on tap should I need them. We're talking Standard P bass spec and string gauge still around the 45-105 mark.
dannybuoy
I'd say a Seymour Duncan SPB-3 and some steel strings such as D'Addario ProSteels. A Sansamp wouldn't hurt either!
Ruck
Thanks! I was thinking along the lines of Seymour Duncan SPB. Not wanting to add another pedal to signal though. I would like to hear other alternatives just to see if there is anything out there like the SPB-3.
The59Sound
DR Hi-Beams for the strings, Quarter Pounder for the pups.
Dood
Agreed on the SPB3 QP!
Lozz196
Yep, SD Quarterpounder, Rotosound or Warwick Red Label steel rounds - and as suggested a Sansamp will help all this no end.
mybass
‘Natural scoop’? If you mean mid range scoop there is a DiMarzio pickup that is explained as having mid scoop....can’t remember the model number.
Cuzzie
Look at the Seymour Duncan APB-1 pick ups. Naturally kid scooped, and more treble to them. Yes they are active, but the pre-amp is located in the pick up housing. They used to come with a switchable pre-amp but over the years they found that in general people only used 1 setting, and thus it is set to that. Great sounding pick ups

I think the DiMarzio I meant are the ‘Ultra’ series and a quick look at their site shows them as Jazz pups so no good for you Edited November 1, 2018 by mybass
project_c
Agree with all the above, you won’t find a pickup with bigger lows than the quarter pounders. Very crunchy highs too. String wise I’m going to say Blue Steels, but HiBeams will sound better in the long run.
Ruck
Time to find myself a set of SPB-3! Thanks all
