Nah
first series are considered top dogs .. That's the ones with a big Fender, small Squier on teh headstock, circa 83 or so...
Not sure about the serial prefix...

JV series are the next ones - Big Squier, small "by Fender"

Those two are considered to be better ones.

The rest are "the rest"
A quick one.

Are all jap squier equal, or are some better then others?

Jap squier oe MIM fender?
Casting my mind back to the 80s, I think the original jv vintage reissue ones had vintage style hardware and nitro finishes, but the non jv ones had cheaper hardware and thick skin finishes. The JVs are the ones that tend to go for much better prices, especially the earliest ones which had a big Fender logo and a little "squier series" logo.

And I'm going to be pedantic here for a moment because a - I'm having a sh!t morning/life and am entitled to be intolerant and b - it irritates me profoundly every single time I see it - which is almost every single time I see it.

S Q U I E R - NOT "Squire". They didn't get it wrong on the logo, OK? :)

Well, that's a suprise. I always thought myself imune to trademark hype. My first bass is a JV precision (big squier, small fender, JV0570) If I'm reading your posts and links correctly then this is basically a fender made in Japan with a Squier logo on it, and is a pretty good p bass. It cost me a tenner 5 years ago, havent played it for 2 years coz in my opinion it's a bag of sh*te. so either I am a victim of hype and I didn't like it coz I'm thinking it's a cheap jap copy, or fender p's really are overhyped overpriced planks...

On the up-side it's in a pretty cood condition, with one small belt-buckle chip so maybe I should flog it off to boost my stingray fund. (White with tort 3ply scratchplate any offers? ... :))

Maybe it just needs a decent setup. The mythology goes that Fender chose the Fujigen factory to build Squiers in the early 80s because the quality & consistency of the 70s copies coming from there (Ibanez, Greco etc) was massively higher than the US originals at the time.

The first MIJ Fenders were Japan-market only, Squier was originally just the export brand - as far as I know quality was the same, the only real difference was the name. The 83/84 JVs & SQs are from this era.

I might, it's only just down the road from me...

Actually I already cheered myself up with that rant - and misreading "indignant" as "ignorant". :)

In fairness, a tenner probably isn't overpriced for it. You should be able to get fifteen for it from the [s]deluded[/s] Fender lovers on here.

I had one of them, was a nice P bass indeed, but I didn't keep it long.
Just asked because on eBay a couple of Jap squires, serial beginning with P (1995-96) have had sold, or left with no bids even though the price was well below 200 pound
Those were most likely Silver Series Squiers - not at all the same thing as the JVs that people shell out good cash for. Should have a 'silver series' decal on the ball of the headstock, though some people occasionally make mistakes with these - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=32564
