Dem Jolie-blues
Hi folks, any body got a Hagstrom HB-8 like me ?, anyone got any knowledge of electrical upgrades on this interesting but made for a price instrument ?, I've put flatwounds on for an improved feel to me, but I don't know, the pots seem to feel cheap and numb. Any comments or suggestions? Ta.
Jono Bolton
Firstly, you'd need to establish exactly what it is you don't like about the bass, rather than making changes for the sake of it. I'm not sure what you mean by the pots feeling numb, but if you want to replace them, you'd be best to speak to @KiOgon , who makes bespoke wiring looms for lots of members on here. EliasMooseblaster
Howdy! Another HB-8 owner here. Not had any problems with the pots myself, though I've often thought it might be nice to have either separate volumes or a blend control instead of the 6-way switch - and maybe swapping one or more pots out for a push-pull so I could keep the coil tapping as an option! Intrigued by the switch to flats - did you manage to find a flatwound 8 set, or did you have to put one together from regular bass strings and some guitar flats? BigRedX
IMO the best upgrade you could give this Hagstrom would be a bridge where each string in the course could be individually intonated.
Dem Jolie-blues
Hi guys, thanks for the input, yes, intonation with two strings on one saddle is a compromise, but then it was only seven hundred pounds new, you get what you pay for eh ?, I wonder if such a bridge exists ? A custom built loom is a thought, I have one in my jazz bass, that might get to the bottom of whether it's just "me" with the standard stuff if I follow the supplied link to the member who could supply. Flatwounds, StringsDirect cobbled up a set from singles, well seven of them anyway as only seven were wirewound, strings are 34" scale strings to get from through body to end of headstock even though it's shortscale , haven't put them on yet as I think about whats under that pick guard . Thanks again.
BigRedX
Schaller make an 8-string bridge with individual saddles. Whether it will fit the Hagstrom is another matter.
Dem Jolie-blues
Ooh, do they ?, the Hagstrom bridge is impressively big, to me as long as original screw holes are covered, it's a maybe. I'll Google that, thanks.
BigRedX
Looks as hough the Schaller 8-string bridge has been discontinued, as it's no longer on their website. However Warmoth appear to still have them in stock. Edited November 6, 2018 by BigRedX
