Just back from a couple of weeks in Vietnam and Malaysia. Went to a 'cultural show' in Hoi An and the resident band were all on traditional acoustic instruments - except for this guy!

(Sorry for poor quality - this was zoomed in from way back in the auditorium).

I'm naming it Gerald.

Vietnamese language is all single syllable words - so maybe Ger Ald ?

The bass clearly doubles as a hoe for use on the Glorious Collective Farms of The People.

It does make me wonder though if we're missing some interesting possibilities in headstock designs. I've just found these

I'm just imagining a headstock carved in the shape of a dragon's head. (The head of my dragon tattoo is in the outline shape of a GMR headstock.)

Just for the record, Đàn tứ dây simply means 4 strings (wires, in fact) and the headstock shape is also simply traditional for this instrument whatever body shape.

To be fair, there is a potential ambiguity in this phrasing. One could read 'I'm not sure, but my instinct tells me that it must be traditional', or, 'It is mandatory that it be traditional'. It would appear that some have read the former when your intentions seems to have been the latter.
Hope this helps; a simple misunderstanding, s'all.

The headstock shape must be traditional. This fella turns up in a few Google photo searches playing the " Đàn tứ dây " (Vietnamese bass guitar)

Well, that looks seriously uncomfortable to play, especially seated.
