IMO my top three would be Chuck Rainey on Josie by Steely Dan - nice slightly farty, warm and round Paul Denman on Smooth Operator by Sade - middly and punchy Martin McAloon on Appetite by Prefab Sprout - crunchy I'm interested in listening to other bass players tones that you folks like. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tiran Porter with the Doobie Brothers - classic flatwound/pick thud, particularly on the albums Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices & Stampede. Guy Pratt with Toy Matinee. Very articulate yet sits well in the mix and drives the music. The switch to a chorused sound for the solo tone is very cool. I remember going into some bar in Glasgow about ten years ago to see a Jazz gig, and there he was, swinging away on Double Bass. Will Lee’s line doubled by Greg Phillanganes (or is it the other way around?) makes for a real phat tone.
