M4L666
Is the Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer actually a compressor proper? Or have I just asked for the wrong thing for christmas? Also, if I have got it wrong, what compressors are good?
King Tut
It is a compressor but IMHO doesn't work very well for bass. The behringer one seems to work much better to my ears - I'm sure there's a lot of guys on here will recommend their own favourites.

Clarky
check out this thread about compressors for rock music http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=30431&hl= I ended up buying a CS-3 but with a Monte Allum mod - works very well as a compressor (before you ask, I'm sorry but don't know how you would mod yours, I got it ready-made from another BCer)

Looks cheap, but probably a bit intimidating if you're not handy with a soldering iron.
lonestar
I have one of these great for G**tar but rubbish for bass. EBS Multicomp seem very popular if you have the budget.
RayFW
It depends how much you want to spend. £££: You won't go wrong with either an EBS Multicomp or Demeter Compulator. Expect to pay £160ish ££: BBE Optostomp. Great for around £75 £: At the budget end of the scale consider getting a Line 6 Constrictor. I replaced an EBS Multicomp with a Line 6 I picked up off ebay for £30 and it sounds great to my ears. It's flexible too with 3 different compression modes. Couldn't hear all that much difference in the end result though...its a little brighter and cleaner, but still doesn't do much for me. simon1964
The Aphex Punch Factory is good for quite subtle compression. And I've also used the Boss Limiter pedal which is pretty good, and IMO underrated. But one of the nicest compressors I've use recently is the compressor in the Line 6 Bass Floor Pod - I'm not usually a fan of compressors in multi-effects, but its almost worth buying the floor pod for the compressor alone. gafbass02
Strangely my fave compressor for bass is the unmodded boss cs3! I've had most of the others, still fancy trying the bbe but so far I always go back to the boss.
karlbbb
I quite like the Behringer Limiter/Enhancer, it's working well for me now, but will be upgrading to a BBE OptoStomp as soon as I can afford it.
