Those of us who were at the SE Bass Bash a couple of years ago heard all about this from Herbie himself.  He demonstrated it with himself on upright, Dave Swift playing Herbie's 1960 Jazz.

Great! My mate is on percussion on War Of The Worlds at the moment so he gets to play with Herbie every night.
