Bros Doc

I watched approximately 2 minutes of this. Pretty tragic I thought.

As one of them is about to board a plane, spewing effusive praise about how welcoming British Airways are. Flight Attendant stops him, saying 'We're not ready for you yet'

Watched last night... Didn't think it was a deliberate send up but then again they did do a "comedy" car insurance ad or something a while back. There was a lot of David Brent in the singer, always searching to say something profound and coming out with bullocks. The drummer has massive sibling envy, talking in disbelief that Elton John's manager dropped him when the band split but kept on the singer... D'uhhhh!!!

If it was a comedy it wasn't that funny and it mixed in too much of the real "tragedy" with their sister passing. But if it was a documentary they should have made more of the record label leaving them with nowt within days of it ending.

The gig bit was very odd, and the whole set up with the session music's who weren't washed up 80's session players but the dad's of some of the forty plus year old women who still s team for the Goss brothers.

All round odd.

I watched it new year's Eve and I have to say I quite enjoyed it.

I think the most surprising part of the whole thing for me was the third member of the band, the bass player.

He'd aged really badly and somehow turned black.

The most annoying part, and something I can't stand about modem society in general we the polite poncy arguements.

"I respectfully disagree"

"I feel like I'm not being heard"

You're brothers FFS!

Go outside, knock ten bells our of each other, then come back in and crack on with the job. That's how families are supposed to behave.

bit the bullet and watched it yesterday...brought back a lot of memories from school days.  My opinion of the twins hasn't changed - Luke is basically a nice bloke, if not the sharpest tool in the box (and was noticeably fairly relaxed and self deprecating with the band until his brother arrived), Matthew is still a massive c#nt with no sense of humour.  They hated each other at school (I remember them being quite annoyed at being lumped into the same form when they joined the school, as they'd always hated being treated as "the twins") and that clearly hasn't changed.

Some of it rang very true - Luke is right that he was always regarded as "the ugly one", but in fairness that's when he's standing next to his very good looking brother - he didn't struggle to get girlfriends, and misses that he was also regarded as the much nicer one of the pair.  Clearly still got a massive chip on his shoulder about that, despite him having had a much better career since the band broke up.  Also, given that he spends the entire film in a leather jacket and Soundgarden/Chili Peppers/etc T-shirts, he's basically modelled himself on how I was dressing back in the day.  Sadly he is modelling his haircut on how I look now.  He is the world's worst Monkey Steve tribute act...

Matt still has a massive ego, no trace of self awareness, and has added to that a complete inability to express himself in simple, straight forward sentences.  Why can't he just say something instead of having to create a badly constructed analogy that he clearly hasn't thought through and makes things quite difficult to understand..."you can go down 15 one way streets..."  anyone?

I was prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt until half way through the broadcast Matt tweeted that the doc was trending on twitter and everyone must be watching, something like ‘Bros back on top again’ what he didn’t mention was that the vast majority of those tweets were gobsmacked 😶 in disbelief.

My wife caught that bit and agreed Ricky Gervais must have written it for him.

I watched it assuming it was their attempt at a Spinal Tap or Office thing, and enjoyed it.

I thought some of it was a bit odd though - a (I presume) joke where he kept going "don't tell me it's Mum" for ages before saying "it's not your Mum" (cue me laughing) - only for him to go "it's your sister" and mention the untimely death of his sibling.

I am still not sure how much of that was real and how much was scripted......probably just how they want it, so good on them.

I decided to watch on catch up and i quite enjoyed it.

So many of the things in it i recognise from bands i've been in with the petty fall outs between singers and guitarists and then the family issues between them. Coming from a family of 3 brothers and a sister some of our family just can't socialise together as the slightest comment wil trigger an arguement between them.

Luke's not too bad a drummer and at the end of the day they did play it live......as far as i know.

Yep i think Matt is a bit of a prima donna but many singers are like that and i can see why Luke has always felt a bit threatened especially when they turn up at the studio and the drums have all been pre-programmed so what's he there for. As a bass player i can relate to his circumstances and what he feels. Usually drummers and bassists are forgotten about in bands and their suggestions are ignored. Not a complaint its just the way it is.

I could feel it when they sang Forgiveness in the studio. Quite a touching moment.

Unbelievably po-faced and displaying jaw-droppingly tiny levels of self-awareness, even by showbiz standards. I'm still not sure it wasn't scripted tho - how can anyone, anyone look at a camera with a straight face and say "I made a conscious decision, thanks to Stevie Wonder, not to believe in superstition..."?

Actually, the more I think about it, the less credible it actually is as presented: "We were called Caviar. We didn't know what it was, just that it was expensive. Then we found out it was fish eggs...that's not a great, erm, look for a band..."

If you didn't see who was behind the production of it, have a look at the closing credits (SPOILER : It's James Corden and his production company). That may explain the particular slant on the way that this documentary was delivered.

It was clearly filmed and put together to come across Spinal Tap esque in my opinion... and that's why it got the traction that it did. I mean, the comedy/cringeworthy lines -

"The best toy we had growing up was a dart. No dart board, just a dart" - Matt Goss

"One of my songs is called 'We're All Kings' - which is about a man sweeping the road - he's one of my kings because I'm thankful I don't have to sweep the road." - Matt Goss

"The letters H, O, M, E are so important to me because they personify the word home." - Matt Goss

"I'm a Londoner. Embankment. Big Ben. Cab drivers." - Luke Goss

"I made a conscious decision because of Stevie Wonder not to be superstitious." - Matt Goss

"Epitome, which I believe is Latin for abstract." - Matt Goss

"I think hindsight is the philosophy of fools. You learn nothing in some way because sometimes you have to do the same again." - Matt Goss

"I was a rectangle and he was a rectangle and we made a square that became a fortress." - Matt Goss

My personal favourite bit was Matt showing us around his man pad... with his chessboard.

Anyway, I don't believe for one minute that this was that way that this documentary was meant to pan out for the Goss brothers originally - I think the production company took all the cringe and made that the primary content.

All the production element of the stage show wasn't included - you don't go from a John Henry's studio to a stage in the manner that they did. There would have been production rehearsals and everything.... but that would have diluted the imagery presented to the end viewer. I thought the musicians did come across bad though - sitting on the phones and looking like they'd rather be anywhere else.

I'm guessing the Goss brothers did OK out of it though - it's probably got more viewings and people talking than a regular portrayal would have got. For example, we are talking about it now. Would we be doing the same if it was a straightforward bland take on a reunion gig? Nah. No way. People are actively watching this docu for the cringe factor and what they've heard about it on social media whereas in any other situation, not given it the time of day.

One thing that I did think was a bit odd was that the Beeb allowed a product hype - Tama and Zildjian - I thought they were usually dead against such sort of advertisement. Maybe it slipped through the net.

On the whole, I kinda feel sorry for Luke... Matt is clearly an ego and a very difficult person to work with. The tour obviously turned a bit sour and cancelled with "logistics" problems. Maybe that was always the plan - to add more fuel to the documentary story.

Bet it didn't feature the original bassist Craig who was bought out quite quickly after the made it?

Didnt Ken go on and manage one of those cheesy girlie groups like Atomic Kitten ? Yep, I've gotta watch this. I recall Mark Kermode giving it the thumbs up on that 5Live film review show he does with Simon Mayo

If you want to call Pink cheesy, than yeah, he signed and managed her.

- and just been told he was instrumental to the success of Robbie William's solo career.

I can see why he turned down the "opportunity" to appear in this documentary.
