Bands you just discovered that made you go “Wow!”

Probably not cool, but I was listening to a random rock playlist on Spotify & Prophets of Rage came on and they were so much better than everything else. Those rage boys have still got it!

the last band to really blow me away though is king gizzard...... although some of their stuff is a bit hit or miss.

Don't like this sort of thing, but this LP's been on repeat...a lot.

What's not to like?

Skip 25 seconds if, like me, you find the lumpy death-rattle of a Hardly Desirable just plain annoying...

Simply cannot get enough of this...

This last one's a bit of a cheat, since I'm now their bass player, but I remembered the band from doing a gig with them back in the early days of the Terrortones, and was so impressed that when the chance to be a member of the band came up I jumped at it!

I really liked that Grimes track too, never listened to her before assuming it would just be like most modern pop tosh. I'd only ever heard about her due to her dating Elon Musk.

Like many of us I've gone past the point of finding a whole lot of new music that makes me go "wow". However a couple of years back a mate dragged me along to see these guys:

Forgive me if I've banged on about Lifesigns before (which I have) but blown away was an understatement! Quite exceptional to see musicians of this calibre playing such gorgeous, expansive music in a local pub that I've played dozens of times myself.

They're probably my current favourite band - and thoroughly lovely human beings to boot. :)

Great band. And adding the fantastic Dave Bainbridge, formerly of Iona, on guitar has done them no harm at all!

Just discovered the House & Garage Orchestra about a month ago.  Fantastic stuff!

And despite a friend telling me a few years back to listen to them, I've only recently took notice of Moderat.

Yep I'm big into Moderat which is a collaboration between two other acts; Modeselektor and Apparat. If you like quirky electronica, they're well recommended as are fellow Germans Mouse on Mars

My two big recent 'discoveries' of late are Solar Fields and AES Dana, both on the French Ultimae label which specialises in ambient electronica with a mid-tempo trance-y vibe. Both been around for yonks though. Recommended if you like early The Orb, John Hopkins, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Global Communication and the like

Cheers. They sound right up my street.  I’m big into ambient electronica stuff such as Orb, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis (Blade Runner is possibly my fave album) & so on.

Ive had a little listen to Modeselektor & Aparat, but not had a proper listen as yet.

Grimes appear to have none something interesting with their YouTube URL, as the track I wanted to link was Kill V Main, but a different track "Genesis" actually came up when I posted my reply, and since then it's changed again. They are all good though...

Kind of depends what you mean by "new"...

About six years ago Walter Trout headlined a showcase of new blues bands on a tour that included the Mcr Ritz. I got very bored and was thinking "What would it take for the next young band I've never heard of to have me on the edge of my seat thinking 'Oh $h1t!' within the first four bars?"

The next young band I'd never heard of was Virgil and the Accelerators. And within the first four bars I was on the edge of my seat thinking "Oh $h1t!"

They went on to be friends, I was on their permanent guest list until they sadly split up, and they headlined my 60th birthday charity gig. I've still never heard anyone play electric guitar with the full dynamic and emotional range that Virgil has.

More recently, a couple of years ago, went to see the Temperance Movement at Mcr Academy. I really like their studio work, but live they're dreadful imho. But as always went in time to see the support band - The Sheepdogs, Canadian "retro-rock" band, old-fashioned sound, excellent musicians, great live show, perfect four or sometimes five-part vocal harmonies. I've now seen all four of their Mcr gigs, and looking forward to another Mcr Academy 2 Feb.

Rival sons. Have had two bass players and both are great.

The Sheepdogs (see my previous post on this thread) are opening for them on their next UK tour, so I'll stay on to see them  🙂

This happens sometimes - I only got into Jason Isbell - another nomination for this thread - because I wanted another chance to see Tift Merritt who was opening for him in Mcr last year.
