This question has cropped up alot lately. If you want to buy new then my answer, as ever, would be the Ibanez SR505BM. :)

However, if you're happy to go second-hand then I would also join the others in recommending the Lakland that is being sold here for a very decent price. (http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31960)

Maybe this? - might get a bargain as 0 feedback, cash on collection and have a good look at it before handing over the moolah.

I would have said that a while ago until i went back to P basses. I know, P's and Jazzes are out but since going back to a P ive found that the punch and warmth is there, minus the bloody annoying click i get with a pick ;-)

Agreed. A secondhand 5-string Corvette would do the job very well. And if you ever decide to become a slap/pop fiend, you wouldn't need to change bass. Warwicks are great for funk or metal.

played a corvette standard swamp ash passive, very mellow, very woody earthy (hey?) tone. lovely. Was a 4 string though.

more expensive, 30 days return policy though. :)

One of my guitarists is selling a thru-neck Peavey 5 string, I'm not sure which model it is but it looks much like this:

He's not after much for it and if you're interested I'd get my hands on it and try to get you some more details. I've played it before and it felt and sounded really good, plenty of tone control if I remember correctly.

Hi, check out the OLP Tony Levin Stingray V Well within your budget at about £295 and possibly cheaper if you shop around. Real cool looker and I had a go on one last month. Was really suprised. It seriously kicked some great sounds out. Comfy to play and a classic design.

Cheers
K

When I was strolling through the music stores, I played MANY, and i don't mean 10, basses. I had a simmilair budget in my pocket. At first i wanted an ESP-LTD, but when I came across the Yamaha RBX375, my choice was instantanious. It was outstanding - great, punchy, low and very versitile sound, the body just screamed metal, in a good way (unlike B.C.Rich'es). Really worth concideration :) Also it sounds nice playing anything else

I'm sorry if this is a huge generalisation but when I have played Dean's, ESP's, BC Rich's and the like I always get the feeling the sound and the feel is an after thought, looks always come first.
