alyctes
Do nylon-coated strings survive picks well? I'm thinking about trying this, but I'm not keen to write off a set of strings in the process. Anyone else tried? Thoughts on pick stiffness and material? All Most thoughts gratefully received
Paul S
The ones I have tried have been fine in terms of wear but that 'plunky pick on flats' sound is greater than with metal flats. Not that it is bad thing, just a bit different.
Pea Turgh
What about one of those compressed felt picks I heard about once twenty years ago?
Sonic_Groove
They work fine with a pick. Roto Blacks n pick sound like this: B

alyctes
Lovely. Thanks folks, I will give it a go. I have a couple of leather picks (and maybe a fibre one somewhere?) so will try that.

All Most thoughts gratefully received DR strings (black beauties and the like) definitely suffered from wear more quickly than I'd have liked, both at frets (leaving marks underneath, which become very visible if you ever remove and reinstall the strings) and where you pick. I also had Elites nylon coated guitar strings and they also pealed quickly, but at least I was replacing guitar strings regularly so it wasn't bothersome. The damage was only cosmetic, 'though... they still sounded good. If you don't need to keep the strings on for more than 6 months then you'll probably be ok. Nylon tapewounds seemed to not really be affected.
danny-79
I use Elixirs, the coating does eventually start to peel after a while of using a pick but it does with fingers as well (if that’s the kind of coating you meant) ive got flats on my Jazz and acoustic and tend to use a pick a lot more than I normally would with the acoustic (Tortex Blue)
