Teebs
Bilbo, I know nothing at all about cardiology, so I won't be offering you any heart advice. I hope that you make a full & speedy recovery - take it easy & look after yourself. All the best
Dad3353
+1 ^^, and, for good measure, another bouquet, of Lucky Shamrocks. You've had your 'Good Luck', don't push it (or yourself...)...

My dad a scary one at the swimming pool. Lucky, as he was seen quickly and they hay people ready to deal with situations like that, ambulance took 3 minutes and hospital was 10 minutes away. He's in great shape now. But not everyone would be in great shape. Your cardiologist will have all the info and is the one who can advise with regards to any physical activity. Please go ask those who have your data and know about your condition. Then come back to ask us if DB is good for metal.

leftybassman392
Good to hear you're back on your hind legs again so soon. Long may it stay that way. As to advice, I'm firmly in the 'pay attention to what your doctors tell you' school and always have been. We will all have the very best of best intentions for you, but asking a bunch of hairy-arsed bass players about major medical issues.. I mean, Really? Here's my two penn'orth: the fact that you're on here asking us at all probably means you want to do it if at all possible and are here seeking, well, not permission exactly; more confirmation that it's ok. Much as we might like to offer you sound advice, we're really not the people to ask. Others have said it already, and now I've said it. Again.

Bilbo
I am intending to wait for proper medical advice but I just wanted to hear what other people's experiences have been. Have depped out the first couple already.
hubrad
About 15 years ago, the bassist in a band in which I played guitar had a heart attack, mild enough that he was able to drive himself to A&E. Docs told him to get back to work but lay off heavy lifting, so for a few months he had a (younger and fitter) friend roadying for him. Seemed to work. Best wishes for a good recovery, Bilbo! On electric, I can play for hours without a problem but, on double bass, I struggle by the end of two sets. Recent adjustments to the bass have helped but gaps between gigs are impeding the development of gig ready stamina. Reverting to electric is certainly an option. Could your physical struggle be caused by having a heart problem? I just wonder if this was a warning sign for you?

Have depped out the first couple already. On a broader front, although few if any of us are cardiologists, several of us have what risk communicators call 'situated knowledge', that is where a lay person acquires a certain amount of specialist knowledge gleaned from their own experience and talks with doctors because it's relevant to them. Mining that, as you've done, can be very helpful and hopefully you've found some of the above informative. What's not good of course is to regard that situated knowledge as necessarily applicable in your case. For that you need a grownup.
