Best place for knobs?

Hey there

First time poster. How you doing?

I have a spector legend which is rapidly losing knobs. Out of the original 4 I only have 1 left. I normally have enough trouble buying strings so I thought I'd check with the experts before I spend some of the christmas fund. Where is the best place to buy from and are they all a standard size? I'm not necessarily looking for anything fancy like skulls just a plain old pot.

Many thanks

Rich

Hi Rich, welcome to Basschat!

http://www.allparts.uk.com/index.php are very fast and have a small selection of less fancy knobs. Also look for WDmusicproducts who are similar and I think have a few more.

Why not pop into the 'introduce yourself' forum and tell us a bit about you and your gear etc?

Cheers

Why don't you google it? :)
(Sorry Rich.... bit of an in-joke round here at the moment! Welcome to the madness and enjoy BC.)
Now a serious answer to your question and this might sounds a little stupid... have you contacted Spector themselves? If not Cetera (a BC member) is a spector endorsee and might be able to help you. Try dropping him a pm.

Cheers,

Jamie

Nothing else to add except welcome.

I googled bass knob and all i saw was pictures of Mark King. As I'm not sure of which players it is cool or uncool to like on this board let me please specify that this was a joke and I only said it because i am jealous of his mad skills (or am I?)

I'm not sure of the official name for them but are all the stalks that the pot fits on of a standard size or do I need ones specifically made for spector?

Allparts give dimensions on their site, so should be easy to match the knob you've got left. If it's like my Spector the pots are split shaft, so it could be these.

The problem I had was the knobs are fixed with a grub screw, which had been tightened against the split shaft, which bent inwards. Could that be why yours are falling off?
The important thing to stop them falling off again is to open out the split shaft some, so they go on nice and tight. If you have a grub screw, aim it into the split, so it tried to force it further open and therefore more secure.
I found that highly erotic.

Paul.

forgive me for being a complete spoon - the shaft has a vertical groove does this mean it is a split shaft? Does this mean only split shaft pots will fit? Sorry for being a complete idiot any clarification will be great

Yep, sort of slot down the middle.

Shafts are usually solid and round, or split down the middle and splined. The idea of the split and splined is they accept push on knobs that dont need grub screws, and the split allows a bit of leeway with the fit. But like they said if you use grub screws to the side of the split then you will push the two halfs of the shaft together and possibly the screw will go too far and fall out. If you put the screw in the split you will push the two halfs of the shaft apart for a tighter fit.

That all sounds disgusting :)

Four of these would be perfect - for about the same price as a Squier VMP-TB.
