I once played in a covers band where the drummer was insistent that everything had to be exactly note for note like the original recording.  We played Immigrant song and I put a slide in at the end of one of the lines, nothing over the top just a simple descending slide and and he stopped playing, the guitar player stopped playing and he screamed at me that the original did not have slides in it , I left that band not long after

This sounds like the makings of an excellent documentary.

I obviously don't know your circumstances but are there other opportunities in your area to join another band or form a new band with guys that share or equal your own commitment. I'd really struggle with that attitude long term so you have my sympathy.

Dave

Cheers. The current  singer in my GF, so i put up with the struggle as i really cant be bothered to find somewhere else to live lol.

Sometimes i think its just me being picky, but what gets to me more is the attitude from the others that it doesn't matter, it will be fine. We just got rid of our drummer of 2 years, as he was always playing the songs wrong (as opposed to just making the odd mistake),  Id had a long stint with him making mistakes, and at his reply was always 'well, how do you want me to play it' i pointed out quite a few times that i was the bass player........

That's a bit extreme. You should never play slides in Zep songs. Tsk tsk tsk.:laugh1:xD:laugh1:

Seriously though that's taking it too far for any band and i you did the right thing and moved on.

Aha so that's the reason for staying with the band. Understand your predicament but can't you and your GF find a better band or slowly replace the lazy ones until you have what you need.

The problem there is that once you've gathered first class musicians around you it means you are now the weaker link and could get kicked out by them :laugh1::laugh1::laugh1:

Its not just this band, its all bands ive been in. its not often, but i just cant get my head around people that do this. GF is included in this, so you see my predicament lol.

But yes, we are slowly replacing the other members. Gone through 4 guitarists in the past 2 years, and now have a new drummer (ironically our old drummer from a few years ago).

Im probably the send least talented member of the band, but definitely the most dedicated.

Up our way there are venues that specialise in having soul/funk discos, I would rather go to one of them anytime over watching a crap live band.

Nah mate, soul/funk doesn't do it for me

I'm afraid you have to make allowances when in a band, you'll be very lucky be in a band where nobody has got annoying habits, and lets not forget we've got them as well, always worth remembering

Not me, i'm perfect lol.

Yes, i make allowances for it, and its not something that would driver me to leave a band, but still annoying.

there's probably a thread on a guitarists forum about this bloke who's never happy and gets through his guitarists at a rapid rate, just because they learned a different version of the cover he wanted to do :laugh1:

Nah, thats way too long a sentence for them to write 🙂

Actually none of the guitarist have been sacked for that, they just weren't any good. The drummer mainly pushed for those to go. One said he knew all the songs before he joined, but then realised he knew 'different versions'....of every song 8-). Even though he had the play list for a few weeks before coming along he was so lost it was embarrassing. He could play, but somehow chose not to play any of our songs.

Should add, im not the one running the band, im just the one that speaks up when the rest all pat themselves on the back because we managed to get through a song.

ah, yes, that's me too.  I spent years biting my tongue as I'm rarely the BL, and I'd spend my time whingeing to bandmates about how awful something or somebody was, and magically hoping that it would improve, or that the offending band member would realise that the wasn't up to the job and quit.  Then I joined a band with a much higher standard of musicians than my bands to that point to find that just saying to their face that something somebody has played is wrong/that was awful/can't you play something different/you missed that part/got that wrong/etc was pretty standard, and got much better results.  People instantly know what they've done wrong, what you don't like and what needs to be improved or changed.  If they disagree then it gets discussed in the open and resolved

In one band (of a lower standard but I'd applied my new "just tell people when they've got things wrong" approach) I got known to be the bloke who was never happy as the rest of them were firmly of the belief that if the crowd applauds it doesn't matter how many mistakes you make but they also credit me with having whipped them into shape and made us a much better band.

YMMV

Yep, i had that rep in my old band. Thing is until i came along (we were mates before but I hadn’t had any contact with them for years) they had one pub gig every 3-4 months. I became the pain that woudld keep motioning about mistakes and lack of tightness, and i pushed and pushed until we were good enough to get on agents books. The band lasted 13 years, and at our peak we were doing 50+ functions a year.......and still I was never happy lol. Even right to the end they would say that we go down well enough so its all good. No need to learn new songs as we have enough etc etc. But they would eachmoan about the others behind thier back, but i was the only one that would  just come out and say it, and It helped a lot.

Makes you think now :laugh1:xD:laugh1:

Think our band has an open outlook too. Usually something isn't quite right we'll finish the song and go back to whatever isn't quite right. Everyone seems to know what that is tho but its usually done in a humourous way and never seems to offend if someone picks you up on something or other. Our previous keys player couldn't quite hack that approach and took it too personally and left. Our new keys guy has so far been open to suggestions and ideas and is upfront in asking if what he's doing is ok.He's only had one rehearsal so far but very promising. Many of our covers don't have keys so he likes the input from us on how best to tackle those particular songs.

I think there are ways to approach different people tho so its horses for courses really. This is the first band i've been in that everyone has a similar attitude to learning new songs and getting the fine detail sorted too Its actually quite a relief to do a new song at rehearsal and find positive comments along with minor issues. I wish everyone could experience this and know what its like to be in a band where everyone thinks the same.

Dave
