Tech21 GED-2112 - question

I know how to set up pedals and gain levels etc. After 43 years of playing I should know what I'm doing 😉

 

When I purchased the DI-2112, I also got an 18v adaptor because that is what is recommended by Tech21.

 

Tech 21 make great products. No doubt about that. They have been the 'industry standard' for years.

Unfortunately their 'drive' sections just don't do it for me.

 

My favourite bass player is Geddy. Since he started using the Sansamp, I cannot stand his tone. Something about it seems artificial and fizzy.

That's just my opinion. I'm just one in a sea of a million bass players who are happy with the tone they get from Sansamp products.

 

Just an observation, but I will look elsewhere for my 'drive' sounds.

Prior to my dUg purchase, I was running this into two channels.  Close.

 

The BDDI was always on...I tended to let the GT2 handle the top end tone/dirt.

I have the little Dug pedal too and I really like it, but keep returning to the GL. I should probably put some effort in since it fits in your pocket.

I agree that many players - especially guitarists - don’t grasp the distortion/compression relationship. I can’t count the number of times I’ve sat & watched a guy widdling like his life depended on it, yet all anyone can hear is wasps’ nest! It’s even more important for bass, where note attack & definition is important. Great advice to work backwards

In regards to the GED-2112

I find the manual hard to read, as I zoom in the manual blurs,  I'm reading the section on Send and return and I understand what it is saying but can't wrap my head around the actual application

 

1) What I'm trying to figure out is the XLR out going some distance to my Scarlett 18i20.  I want to "insert" a chorus foot pedal, or between the "send and return" (I'm very new to this).

Will I need to use the XLR (about 50' after cable management) or use the 1/4' cable out?

 

2) again I am just crawling at this stage.  after the above I want to mic my Laney, send that to my Scarlett or is this nonsense?

 

3) on the back of my Laney it has Send and Return, I assume those will be used

Do you have the GED-2112? Just run the pedal in front. There is not much benefit running in the loop. If you want to do that, send the 1/4" send on the back of the unit to the input of your chorus pedal and send the output of the pedal to the effects return jack.

I just watched one of your YouTube videos (our sponsored video) and learned this a 2 channel preamp, that is great news and simplifies what I was hoping to achieve, that is sending a clean and POWERFUL full bass signal to my audio Interface and a processed sound to a second channel possible some panning between those signals.

I did choose this unit because of it Mid-shift feature and now I'm discovering it has broadened my imagination.

 

I would like to describe what I have or rather what I want to use and get a technique application of the connection of said equipment

I have several "Bass" pedals but only 1 maybe 2 I would use in this signal chain, first is a Boss CEB-3 Bass chorus the second with very limited use is a MXR 10 band EG, using only 31.5, 62.6hz bands, all other tone processing from the SansAmp and the tone controls on my Basses.  It is vert important to note I am not playing Live, I'm recording this either Amp mic'd or direct signal to my audio interface or both if recommended technically.  Also my Laney amp has it's own EQ and Compressor and it's own Send and Return jacks.  So between the amp and the 2112 there are a lot of ins and outs.

 

 

My music will have keyboard bass but that will have its own place in a song, I want those strings to challenge those keys like a "call and response" in a way and even win that battle, obviously has lower tones, I get that, I'm referring to the SAME OCTIVE.

With that said it is now time to connect it all up, I've got the cables in hand I just need the right routing.  Below is my first impression

 

At the Laney send the MXR EQ through the send/return of the amp, the return from the amp goes to the 2112 into the "Deep" section.  The Chorus in the "Drive" channel's Send/Return and the XLR from both Deep and Drive to my Audio Interface (Scarlett 18i20).  How am I doing?

This is not the best approach. The GED-2112 is a preamp and meant to take the place of your amp. It can be used directly into a mixer/interface, power amp and cab. If you want to use it with a bass amp it works best into the front input and your amp should be set flat.

 

The Drive and Deep channels are fed by a single input. If you want to tie the channels together for single output use contact our support department. [email protected]
