foxyFuze
Hi all, To me, this is THE P bass rock tone. I suspect it's an SVT but can't be sure - any tips at all? I'm getting something similar with a Bassman 100T and PJ bass (J pickup off) with roundwounds, but not quite that gritty edge to it. There's another video where a Sound City 150 is being used to similar effect. Skip to 43s once you get past the damn advert.
Linus27
Sound like a pick with full treble to me.
dannybuoy
Try a Tech21 VT Bass or Sansamp BDDI. Also fresh strings, perhaps steel over nickel.
foxyFuze
Yeah I think newish strings and getting the treble up without it sounding too tinny will help, got my trusty Behringer BDI 21 also!
Lozz196
Newish steel rounds, digging in, and action that enablesa bit of fret-buzz when doing so. Adding some high-mids (2kHz and above) helps. Edited February 3, 2019 by Lozz196
musicbassman
I might be pointing out the obvious here, but this is to my ear is definitely pick playing, but I'm sure you've already realised that. If you've got reasonable technique, then this should be quite straightforward : Full treble on a decent P bass and playing pretty hard, but don't grip the pick too tight. People are saying rounds, but I think decent newish flats might be a better option. The sound really should be almost there straight away and only require minor tweaking. I have a very early JV Squier and this is almost its default sound when used with a pick. (For a pick, I would suggest a 1mm Jim Dunlop nylon as best all rounder.) 🙂
ubit
I have an Ampeg SVT 2 Pro, American P bass and a Barefaced Super Twin. Always use new or nearly new roundwounds. Gives me just that sound. My favourite.

Jonse
Got a roadworn P and I get pretty close using a sansamp and d'addario chromes instead of rounds. Just can't get on with them.
Combed20
Sorry to thread hijack, but never heard of this band or song - really enjoyed. Reminded me of Joan Jett. Anyway, I'm off to check out this album. Oh yeah, and your right - great bass sound!
