Soledad Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Is it still how it was when I was a kid - there's the Precision (not P Bass please!) and the Jazz - pick one. It was like joining a gang - for life. Years on I've owned both and calmed down a bit - I'd be OK being seen with either. So what's the current view - Jazzes seem more common these days. Give me the current state of play. Quote
Lozz196 Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Well on the punk/Oi circuit the Precision seems to hold more favour, not sure about any other genres though. Quote
Reggaebass Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 I have both jazzes and precision’s and going by what I play most, it’s the jazz with la Bella flats for me 🙂 Quote
chris_b Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 There is always a compelling reason to have one, or the other, or both. Quote
gjones Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 I like the neck on a Jazz and the clarity of tone. The ideal bass sound, that I hear in my head, is the sound of a Jazz. So when I play in my Blues/Rock band, I play a Jazz. But I also play in a country band and the Precision sound fits that genre very well. So when I play in the county band, I take my Precision. But saying that, I saw a video of my Blues/Rock band the other day, and in it, I was playing my Precision. It sounded pretty ballsy. Quote
ahpook Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 (edited) J bass all the way. I much prefer the neck and, y'know... Jazz Edited February 7, 2019 by ahpook Quote
BreadBin Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I like a Jazz with a Precision neck, just to be awkward. Quote
Ricky 4000 Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I feel like there's change in the air... Quote
uk_lefty Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 (edited) If I was recording or playing in a way where every nuance of my sound was important I'd go jazz. However for knocking out 80's rock and pop covers in pubs and at festivals it has to be the Precision (or since December it is the Stingray). The gutsier tone of the precision is what I prefer live. tom1946 Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Precision or Jazz?? Stingray nowadays... although I still use my Sandblasted Precision occaisionally. 1 Quote
MOSCOWBASS Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I use both, horses for courses. Precision with flats, Jazz with rounds. I find the Jazz with rounds sounds nicer at home, but the Precision is great live with the big band I play with....it has a bit more depth than the jazz. Both brilliant in their own right. 3 Quote
Lw. Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 (edited) Both should always be the option. Edited February 7, 2019 by Lw. 2 Quote
LewisK1975 Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Precision shaped PJ Basses are doing it for me at the moment! The ideal compromise... 1 Quote
Machines Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I got both, but only ever take the Jazz. Quote
Lfalex v1.1 Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Get a Stu Hamm urge? Almost both in one! Quote

Soledad Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 I reckon something's changed then. Nearly everyone has (and can afford) one of each. So are we talking a U.S. one of each here, or is there need (desire) for one of each but Mexican (say) is fine? I'm going to sound very 20th Century here, but I liked the old days* - one player, one bass - JFDI. * and cabs that weighed a sack o' spuds - that's 112lb in old money, about 50-odd Kg. Get in there Quote
Ricky 4000 Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Can't speak for anybody else, but I'm taking P and J as basic designs, rather than just the Fender branded ones. I know you like "P" rather than typing "Precision" every time. 😁 1 Quote
Danuman Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 The P is definitely best, but so is the J. Quote
Teebs Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 To have a P is essential; to have a J is optional. Quote

T-Bay Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Jazz every time for me, the Precision neck is like a Cricket bat. Quote
