Dan Dare
I'd leave well alone if you don't know what you're doing. I'm assuming you want to go back to the darkened/aged look. It's very difficult to do convincingly. If you insist, the best advice I can give is don't stain the bare wood. Protect it with some form of sealer first to prevent the colour from sinking into the grain. You could always play it with dirty hands for a year or so and achieve the effect naturally... Islander
You can probably do this using water based wood stains although I'd practice on some scrap wood before doing anything on the neck. There are tutorials on the web that will show you how - Crimson guitars have a few good ones.
donslow
thanks for the advice guys, something well worth chewing over, I'm not especially after a relic or roadworn look, I'm more looking at options so as to match the lacquer tint that was/should have been on there, water based stains could well be worth a look into though so thankyou for that suggestion. I'm wondering if something like this would get the same effect?! https://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/product/tinted-gloss-nitrocellulose-lacquer-aerosol/
