3.5mm jack plug with screw connection terminals

Does anyone know where I can get a 3.5mm jack plug with screw on connections please?

I have a pair of Sennheiser headphones which I use for practicing and the jack had become damaged and has an intermittent connection. I purchased a standard 3.5mm jack but then only to find that the wiring on the headphones is aluminium and won't solder! The only way I can see around this would be to get a screw terminal jack plug but the only one I can find here is sold by Canford Audio and they have a £35 minimum order charge.

Anyone have any ideas how else I can overcome the problem?

Ta!

Are the wires colored, so is there a lacquer on top of the wires? Then you need some more heat to burn the lacquer first. Those are such pain to solder.

If those wires are really aluminum, you should use oil to solder them. When the wires are under (or in) the oil, the surface will not oxidize and soldering is possible. It doesn't have to be motor oil, you can play with olive oil if that is at hand. You probably need to do few trials first.

Thanks for that link. The wires are colour coded with thin insulation. This has been removed then I scraped the bare wires with a scalpel in order to remove any oxidisation or coating but the wires still refused to tin. Interesting about using oil to stop oxidisation during the soldering. I'll have a go with this later and report back.

Cheers.

Another method I have successfully used with tricky headphone and radio mic cables is;

1. scrape off any lacquer insulation

2. take a single strand of copper wire (from a stranded cable) and wrap it around the wire to be soldered. Carefully wrap a 'ferrule' a bit like the end of a shoelace.

3. tin and solder as usual
