kevbass Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I cant stop watching this, awesome tone, awesome technique, and I like how he changes between slap and fingerstyle and puts his own spin on the bassline, some of his fills make me go wow! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RchAWnAO-BY&NR=1 Easily one of my favourite players on youtube. Quote
mewsie Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 he never fails to entertain me! he looks so relaxed when he plays. Quote
thisnameistaken Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I actually like the sound of his slap playing. It sounds funky, instead of f***ing awful, like everybody else's slap playing. Quote
Kiwi Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I'm not that much of a fan of it. Sure there's a bit of technical fluff but it doesn't really get down on the One like the original bass line, the fancy bits compete with the songs hooks and his timing is off. I know its a jam but I don't see the point of it, it definitely doesn't make the song sound better and isn't that what its all about at the end of the day? Quote

I do like what Marlowe is offering to bassists but sometimes I feel his playing can be really stale, IMO his earlier videos were more enjoyable to watch. Quote
ezbass Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I love MarloweDK's stuff on youtube. What I've noticed is that not matter what bass he uses, be it P or J or other, he always sounds pretty much the same tonewise. Kinda puts any GAS thoughts on the back burner (but not for long eh?). Quote
agoulding Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 thats mainly becuase he uses a korg pandora thing with a pre-amp he uses for all his stuff. great player, i think hes great, i sometimes look through to see his tecniques Quote
Oscar South Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I didn't really like that, he's a good player but he messes with it too much (messing with that song at all is too much) and it just kills the groove, thus killing the song. If you want to hear a good version of that song come down to Alexander's Jazz Bar in Chester tomorrow (mon 8th) evening Quote
bluesparky Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I could never put anything on youtube of me playing, or in fact doing ANYTHING!! I couldn't face the criticism! A bit like Marty McFly in back to the future! Quote
Brother Jones Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I had the temerity to mildly question his version of 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick' and got pretty flamed by others for it - both in the comments section and by him privately. He is very good technically, but no more perfect than the rest of us. Quote

He makes playing look so easy. I hate that. I do agree that you really shouldn't mess with this bass line but im sure a lot of people do. Edited December 8, 2008 by dave_bass5 Quote
nick Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Nice to watch, but I think it doesn't nail the groove like the original bassline. Quote
Faithless Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Well, those fills didn't impress me either (they didn't fit the song).. Oh, it's just me once again.. Quote
dave_bass5 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Since my first post ive just listed to the whole thing and i can see what you guys are now talking about. Not great as it gets further in is it? But, i can imaging in a live/party setting a lot of it might work. Im sure a lot of us can/have gone off the track when its all going really well and the dance floor is heaving. Or maybe its just me making loads of mistakes. Quote

lowdown Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Phill allgaps.. There is a couple of more places he missed, where he could have put fills. Nice tone though. Garry Quote
