kristo
After trying one of these in a shop last year and deciding not to buy it because of feedback issues, I've gone and ordered one with the hope of fitting some kind of magnetic pickup. Anyone have any thoughts on what might fit nicely? I can't find a floating bass pickup.
itu
https://www.benedettipickups.com/micros-custom I do not know for sure, but they might be able to help you. That attachment bar to the fretboard caught my eye.

Any idea if it works with tapewound or flatwound strings, or is it designed specifically for bronze ones?

Any idea if it works with tapewound or flatwound strings, or is it designed specifically for bronze ones? A piezo would usually be more suitable for bronze strings I think. I'm pretty sure the Lace is suitable for regular steel core strings. Here are some more details: Designed especially for bass guitar this new passive Lace Sensor bass pickup has an "Ultra Slim" profile that is only 5/16th tall in height. The height allows almost endless adaptations for either acoustic bass or solid body bass. Single design size allows for 4 or 5 string bass guitars. The USAB Sensor can be surface mounted either with wood screws or a mar resistant 3M adhesive tape that is provided with the pickup. Simply slide the pickup under the strings for installation. No routing or cutting is required. The USAB comes with a high quality cable and female end pin jack. The pickup jack can be permanently mounted if so desired. The pickup is humbucking in design and features no noise operation. The pickup consists of 2 Lace Sensor Micro Matrix Comb bobbins, and triple ceramic 8 magnets as part of this new design. It is passive in design, but can be used without any problems with an active pre amp. Available: Black Matte Only. Position: Bridge, Neck Resistance: 15.5k Peak Frequency: 1800
kristo
Thanks for that. The picture at the top is deceptive, as these basses come with black nylon strings. I’m not planning to use bronze strings so the Lace might be ideal. I’ve also had contact from a pickup maker who might be able to make a floating neck pickup, which would be ace. Shaggy
Aesthetically that bass is crying out for a Charlie Christian style pickup: https://www.musicstore.de/en_OE/EUR/Roswell-Pickups-CHC-Charlie-Christian-Black/art-GIT0043527-000 Some great ideas above, mind

kristo
There is actually quite a bit of space between the top and the strings, so the Lace might be too far away without some kind of riser.....
Maude
If there's lots of clearance under the strings then Rickenbacker toaster style pickups are surface mounted, and suitable retro for that style of bass.

That does look great. I've been speaking to UK pickup winder Aaron Armstrong who's going to put together a 'Johnny Smith' style floating pickup for me.....
