Paul S Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 A perhaps not so idle thought, as I might find myself in the market for a Mustang bass soon. I am looking at the MIJ single split coil ones rather than the recent rash of P/Js - did they ever come with black bodies, black pickguards and a maple neck? I've seen pics of that combo on 70s/80s USA ones. Also the Squier VM Mustang had this option - which is actually quite tempting, I had one and it was great. Muchas gracias Quote
Paul S Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 Hmm, no-one? Anyone owned an American Black/black/maple one? Quote
ikay Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 I think the answer is no. They made an MIJ in black/rosewood but not with a maple board as far as I can see. 1 Quote
Paul S Posted March 19, 2019 Author Posted March 19, 2019 Certainly looks that way. I'll keep my eyes peeled for USA ones or Squiers and decide at the time how much I want to spend. Ta. Quote

bigsmokebass Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Seen one recently but think it was exclusive to CME in that finish. I'll assume a MiM model though 1 Quote

Paul S Posted March 19, 2019 Author Posted March 19, 2019 Yes, a new build is always an option I think the black/tort/maple are the new MIM ones that are P/J, which I don't particularly like. It is the tone from that odd little split coil that appeals as well as the look. I had one of the Squiers a couple of years back and it was surprisingly good - didn't sound much different to a MIJ Mustang I tried. Shouldn't have sold it, really. Could put that on my headstone! burno70 Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Wow - the black with a tort guard looks awesome! These basses are soooo good for the money. Quote
Donnyboy Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 (edited) I had a black/black/maple .. many, many years ago I think it may have been made in USA - I'll try and post a pic. Edited March 20, 2019 by Donnyboy inability to attach image! 1 Quote
Donnyboy Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Here you go... in my Mun & Dad's "Front Room" They didn't seem to mind a Sound City 4x12 & a Hiwatt Amp on proud display I got the Mustang fairly cheap as the local music shop in Falkirk was fire/flood damaged 1 Quote
Grangur Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 I'm currently selling a Japanese split-coil one in white/tort. Net very black though. Quote

Paul S Posted March 20, 2019 Author Posted March 20, 2019 Worth a little more than that now. Amazed you have the paperwork - or at least pics of it. Quote

I found these in a wee box that I've got various bits and bobs in. The Sound City 4x12 was £65 about the same time .. 1 Quote
Paul S Posted March 21, 2019 Author Posted March 21, 2019 Thanks Warren. Call me shallow and superficial, I would hold out for black/black/maple. Believe it or not I am currently selling anything that isn't. Might get confusing eventually.... 1 Quote
