He had really worked on obtained the balance between between being funky and busy and also holding down the groove of a song. It is a classic album. In my opinion some of his best ever work is on De-Loused in the Comatorium by the Mars Volta. Not so much funk but tremendous feel and grove in a prog setting. Horrible 'loudness wars' mastering aside, Californication is also good, though much more simple in terms of basslines. I have not listened to anything by RHCP since seeing them live on the Stadium Arcadium tour in about 2007. They were that bad. 2 Quote

They were 'atmosphere' gigs tbh - loud, fast and focused! I may have been stoned or drunk too! Last time I saw them was in Hyde Park, they were dreadful and the audience was largely uninterested...... Quote

I happily listen to all the RHCP stuff, and I skip some of the mediocre stuff on Stadium Arcadium (could’ve been a single CD). The Stadium Arcadium album and the subsequent gig I went to at the Coventry Ricoh ended my love affair with the Chillies which began back with the Mother's Milk album. It was especially gutting because I'd seen them at the Slaine Castle gig a few years before and they were brilliant. At Coventry they were barely going through the motions. Bassassin Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 Absolutely loved Blood Sugar and it was a massive part of the soundtrack of my life in the mid 90s. As someone who was quite fixated with slap in the 80s, and tried to incorporate it into the rock bands I played in at the time, to hear Flea doing what I'd tried to accomplish so incredibly well was quite inspirational. Never really connected with anything the Chilis did after Blood Sugar, they seem to meander between over-commercialised and self-parody these days. Completely agree that BSSM was probably the pinnacle, that Stadium Arcadia should have been a single CD release and that post John it's not been the same but, but they remain a band that I listen to frequently . miles'tone Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 Yep BSSM is peerless and one of the soundtracks to my life. Saying that, I'll stick my neck out here and say that Californication, at least for me, is their best album. Considering that John was a dead man walking for many years after he first left the band, it was the comeback we all dreamed of but thought impossible. Hell of a vibe and tons of emotion caught on those sessions imho. 2 Quote
