zranyard
Most of my basses have been passive, I used a us 5 string jazz bass for years, but always used a sansamp or some other preamp pedal. I like the flexibility a pedal offers, particularly with having the DI output.
tthiggins
I have 2 active jazz bass's and use them both passive my fender has a j retro which is a great bit of kit but I just prefer the passive tone so it only gets used once in a blue moon when gigging and the onstage sound is shite It's the same with my sire v7 great preamp but I prefer the passive tone.. For me they are a handy tool for adjustments on the fly but they always cloud the signal to some degree.
EdLib-3
This is funny because I have had pretty much the opposite experience than the OP. Although I no longer own an active bass, when I did and used it for gigs where you're on a bill with other bands and you're using someone else's unfamiliar amp and cab, I always found having active electronics with the cut and boost on my bass much easier to quickly get a decent tone live when you haven't had a proper sound check beforehand. Especially when there wasn't time to properly find a good tone that cuts through, using the aforementioned unfamiliar amp. It was a Stingray bass in case you're wondering.
