The clue that this obituary was not written by a guitarist probably lies in the sentence:

That was where he developed his percussive style of playing, initially on a right-handed guitar, despite being left-handed - essentially meaning he was playing back-to-front and upside down.

ps: Note the entirely helpful rude word filter amendment to the Title imposed by the not-at-all-intrusive Big Brother software.

I recall reading many years ago that he was still performing to keep up with medical bills - and true enough, he still was. It's pretty poor that you have to do that (even if he probably loved performing).

What a sound. 0.13s - his bending fingers must have been made of steel!

America.... makes me grateful for our NHS. May they never get their greedy hands on it.

I don't suppose he did a lot of string bending.  I am by no means an aficionado but surf music is something of a guilty pleasure - he was a pretty cool guy.  RIP.

FWIW, some pix and descriptions here of Dale's rig at a club gig in 2016. Outboard reverb into two original Showman amps into a 2x15 and a 1x15 loaded with JBL's

Ferocious.

Skank,

Thanks for that. I was puzzled by the absence of the reverb tank in the photo you posted then had a laugh when I clicked on the link. Great idea!

16 for top E is pretty hardcore, but by comparison 60 for bottom E is almost normal. I use a 56 for drop D and probably wouldn’t struggle with something a little heavier.

Dear grief - .016 - .060 strings? .060???

Note the low E string wound the 'wrong' way round the tuner, all other strings as normal. WTAF?

An interesting approach to decoupling the tank from stage vibration...

.60 is not really almost normal!

Indeed! No danger it is. Well, not for me, anyway. I run .056 bottom E on my Lowdens for Drop D tuning but I could never handle that gauge, never mind a .060, on a Strat or Tele. A .060 is close to the D string on my basses!! 😃
