Bilbo Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 Another Andy West bass part (on an Andy West tune) from the 1979 Dixie Dregs album, 'What If'. Not hard to read per se but hard to read at the tempo they are playing it at! https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/travel-tunes-the-dixie-dregs/ Quote
Bilbo Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 And Lincoln Goines's bass part from the tune 'Tipatina's' from the 1999 Mike Stern album, 'Play' https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/tipatinas-mike-stern/ 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted January 18 Author Posted January 18 I had to get to it eventually. I always loved this tune but never got around to learning it. Bilbo Posted January 18 Author Posted January 18 The last two albums, Light Up and Sia are both very, very strong, compositionally, performance and recording quality. I think they are a great band. 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted January 18 Author Posted January 18 About time for some more Dave Holland. A very readable part from the 2010 Holland Octet album, 'Pathways', this is the tune 'Blue Jean'. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/blue-jean-dave-holland-octet/ 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 (edited) Some Pop/Prog from a new band that are going to go places, this is the Mike Rutherford bass part for the Three Sides Live version of nobody's favourite Genesis track, 'Misunderstanding'. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/misunderstanding-genesis/ Edited January 19 by Bilbo 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted January 20 Author Posted January 20 (edited) I love this - a B-side that appeared as a bonus track on the re-releases of the 1982 Jon Anderson album 'Animation'. Some great playing here across the board but the recording is unclear on who plays bass on which tracks. I think the 'main' bass player on the recording was Italian Stefano Cerri but it also credits John Giblin (who played on the previous album, 'Song Of Seven') and Jack Bruce. I think this sounds like Bruce (and doesn't sound like the other two) but am open to challenge. This is the track 'Spider' (also referred to as 'The Spider' but I think that is wrong. But it doesn't matter as it is still a monster track). https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/spider-jon-anderson/ PS even if you don't want the chart, listen to the track - through headphones. You'll thank me for it! Edited January 21 by Bilbo Quote

You'll thank me for it! That's a hard one as most of it sounds more John Giblin but some specific parts sound very Jack Bruce. In 82 Bruce had more of an attack in his playing altho he was a very adaptable player whereas Giblin had a more mellow sound. Based on that i'd go with Giblin but i guess we'll never know for certain. Great wee song, thoroughly enjoyed it. Good choice. Dave Quote

Bilbo Posted January 21 Author Posted January 21 I looked up Stefano Cerri, the main bass player on the album, and found that he died in 2000. Bummer. 1 Quote
dmccombe7 Posted January 21 Posted January 21 (edited) I've never heard of Stefano Cerri but maybe i should have listened to him before coming to a conclusion between Giblin and Bruce Off to youtube him now. Dave Edit :- He's very good but has a slightly more aggressive style based on the various youtube clips i listened to compared to John Giblin. Always found Giblin to have quite a mellow, flowing style. Edited January 21 by dmccombe7 Quote
Bilbo Posted January 21 Author Posted January 21 (edited) I heard this album when it came out and we were all blown away by this track. Someone reminded me of it today. Mo Foster's bass part on 'Into The Arena' from the first Michael Schenker Group LP (yes it is that old - 1980). Another Simon Phillips feast. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/into-the-arena-michael-schenker-group/ Edited January 21 by Bilbo 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 Re: Cerri, he pops quite a lot which, if I am correct, Giblin and Bruce never do. You can hear it all over the Animation album but not on the Spider track. 1 Quote

Bilbo Posted Sunday at 10:50 Author Posted Sunday at 10:50 (edited) Another set of guitar transcriptions I did recently, this is the full Five Glimpses from the 2006 Ralph Towner album, 'Timeline'. I did them because they were easy and I am trying to get into guitar transcribing as a hobby. And I want to get the total number of transcriptions on the website up to 500 and it is now on 480 so its within touching distance. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/five-glimpses-ralph-towner/ Edited Sunday at 10:53 by Bilbo Quote
Bilbo Posted Sunday at 11:50 Author Posted Sunday at 11:50 (edited) Anthony Jackson's head only bass part to the Joe Henderson tune 'Caribbean Fire Dance' from the 1992 Steve Khan album 'Headline'. Bilbo Posted yesterday at 20:17 Author Posted yesterday at 20:17 Another great tune that i s ridiculously easy to play. This is a modified bass part for the tune 'At The End Of The Day' from the 1980 Mike Rutherford album 'Smallcreeps Day'. I say modified because a lot of the chart is not a bass but a synth bass and I had to tweak it to make it work on a 4-string. It is just a simple chart for developing readers to have a crack out straight out of the box. A couple of 7:8 bars to watch for but, otherwise, like falling off a log. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/at-the-end-of-the-day-mike-rutherford/ 1 Quote
