... (Marc Johnson is one who I struggle to transcribe)...

Bass Desires is amongst my favourite albums, but yeah, gave up trying to transcribe that one 🫤

Some great transcriptions there Rob, I’ve only just discovered this thread and your website. I’m looking forward to doing battle with War of the Worlds, Tubular Bells etc. Is there any way to send you a few coffee/beer tokens in appreciation?

Hi Rob do you mind if i ask what software you are using to slow the songs down without detuning the music. ?

I have a few Magnum songs to learn and can't find TABS or transcript for any Magnum songs anywhere. Slowing down the songs might help me pick out the bass notes more easily as they fade into the background noise quite a bit.

Most of their songs are pretty straightforward with just the occasional ones having a nice wee bass run.

I use Transcribe from Seventh String. It only costs about £35 so it is not expensive and it is incredibly versatile. I have had my copy for years and have been upgrading for free repeatedly ever since I first got it. Incredible value for money. You can slow stuff down to 10% speed without changing pitch and you can isolate passages to focus in on one note or a phrase etc. It's marvellous for those tricksy little licks that you can't quite hear at full speed. I could never have done half of the stuff on the website without it.  Highly recommended. I then transcribe onto Sibelius which I have on a subscription for less that £20 a month (I can't remember how much).

If you want any Magnum tunes off Chase The Dragon transcribed, let me know. I loved that album when I had more hair. 'The Teacher' is already up there!

A bit of fun today.

Kermit Driscoll's part for 'Washington Post March' from the 1992 Bill Frissel album 'Have A Little Faith'. Great fun. I had to change the octaves a few times to keep the chart playable on a 4 string. There is an A below a low B in there so I suspect some detuning was going on. A couple of great licks in there but mostly is it roots and fifths.

No need for that, my friend. Just enjoy the website and 'pass it on' in any way you can.

Anything from KoM, Magnum II or Marauder? Love that era. If you have a vocalist who can do a Bob Carley, I would like to hear that.

I was actually in a really good Magnum tribute band for a couple of years. It featured a guitarist who had been in Bob Catley's solo band and a keys player who had played on one of his albums.

It was a cool band and some of the songs are great, but it was very niche / difficult to get enough gigs! Having said that, we used to have people who would follow us around - one guy from Durham came to every gig, even if we were paying in the Midlands! Magnum may not have been the biggest band around, but they do have a genuinely devoted following.

I can remember you talking about the Magnum tribute. Without hi-jacking Robs thread it is a concern that there will be a lack of gigs.

I'm surprised that 'Les Morts Dansants' isn't on Dave's list! A pretty good bassline to transcribe, from what I remember.

Its for an audition so probably not their full set list. They're at the starting point by sounds of it.

I am enjoying it, Dave. Easy wins and I doubt anyone else is doing them so it all helps with the 'footfall' on the website.

I always wanted to do 'Soldier Of The Line'!

I remember the bass going from a standard Jazz tone to all of a sudden that well defined bass growl and i believe he changed to an Aria for that album, possibly the SB1000. Quite a significant change of sound.

I once helped them in with their gear at our local venue probably circa 82 (owner let us in for free to the gig at night and a few free beers) Always thought they were an odd bunch. Catley came across as very vain and stand offish, Lowe couldn't see 3 ft in front of him on stage without his glasses and he wouldn't wear them live, drummer wouldn't let anyone touch his drum gear so he carried all his in on his own. The only decent one was Mark Stanway who was very pleasant guy and happy to chat with us. Also remember Stanway when he appeared with Grand Slam and again a nice guy altho Grand Slam were all great company with Phil playing pool with us in the bar even buying his share of the rounds. Its little moments like that when you get to see the real people behind the musicians.

Happy days Rob.

Bizarrely, knowing a few people connected with Magnum, that's a completely opposite viewpoint than they all have, especially regarding Stanway!

It's all a matter of perspective. Multi Story, the prog band I recorded a track with for their CBF10 cd, they supported Magnum on the OASTN tour. They got on well with Stanway but didn't say much about the others either way. I have never met any of them.
