I will have a look at it when I get the chance and try to see if my very basic reading skills are up to it! I know the song, but what I play is based more on what George Porter Jr and Andy Hess played on later live versions. I didn't even know that the bass player from the Dave Matthews Band was on the original. 

 

I learnt it for a band I was depping for, then they changed the key for the girl singer, played it on one gig and promptly dropped it for some reason! I did half a dozen gigs for them and then suggested that perhaps they should find a more permanent bass player. However, I always thought that it was a great song!

I just wanted to say I have been working on reading guitar parts recently and am making progress. I bought five books of reading studies in January and read through all of them in about three weeks (600+ pages inc. Sor, Guiliani, the Leavitt Advanced Reading book etc). The skill of reading is a massive enhancement to your capacity to learn. It's not about reading gigs, it's about opening doors.

I just ran up a transcription of the Prelude to Cello Suite No. VI by J.S. Bach. Just a reading exercise for extended range bases (I think you could do it on a 5, 6 or 7 string but a 4 would need you to move things around in a couple of places). Just something to chew on if you are looking for a challenge (everyone knows the Prelude to Suite No. 1 so I though something different would be worth considering).

Superb choice Rob. Fantastic band. My fav track at the moment from FM is Its Begun to Rain Live at the Agora version.

I feel like you are pushing out a new transcription every hour, @Bilbo. For me a simple song takes easily two days, or more.

I have a lot of time on my hands at the moment, itu. The gigs have dried up and my efforts to re-build my profile as a player locally are not proving to be that successful.  I suspect I will struggle to sustain this level of output for long.

 

In the meantime, as a form of self-harm, I have transcribed the complete Geddy Lee bass part for the tune(s) 'The Fountain Of Lamneth' from the 1975 Rush album, 'Caress Of Steel'. All 11 pages of it. What was I thinking.

I hadn't listened to it for decades myself, Dave, but, some days, it's just a question of what to try next. Stuff like this then comes out of left field for no reason whatsoever and off I go. I am now minded to finish the whole album which would mean there are four full Rush albums on the website.

If looking for ideas have you heard of these bands :-

Starcastle - from back in the 80's. Kind of Yes type sound but more commercial.

Sound of Contact  - Dimensionaut is one of my fav Prog albums.

Arjen Lucassen - From the Lost In The New Real album my fav track is A Hundred & Sixty Four but few others on this that could be interesting for you as a prog fan too.

 

Not trying to give you work there Rob. Was only if looking for other avenues and ideas altho i'm sure you already have plenty.

Sound of Contact is Phil Collins son Simon on drums and lead vocals and he's good.

Arjen Lucassen has his own project band called Ayreon but its not really my taste but Lost in New Real is a concept album with 50% his own songs and 50% as covers by Floyd, Hawkwind and various other bands with his own unique take on it. Rutger Hauer did the narration on the album but i won't tell you anymore. I really like the lyrics on some of his songs.

Had a listen to SoC. It's one of those mixes where the bass is kind of lost in a drone - he does sound like his dad (same hair as well, poor sod). Not feeling the Lucassen yet. Might give it another go.
