Bilbo Posted March 12 Author Posted March 12 This one is pure nostalgia for me. It is the complete Bob Marshall bass part for the tune 'Stand Up (And Give Me A Reason)' from the 1977 John Miles album, 'Stranger In The City'. I got this album in a sale bin when I was still exploring music as a new and exciting thing - I just wanted to hear everything. The album wasn't really heavy enough for me but there were two tracks that I did like because they have great guitar solos in. This was one of them (the solo at the end of the track). I learned to play it on guitar and can still scat the solo today, 45 years later (at least). It is a little dated but I still love it. Great bass part. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/stand-up-and-give-me-a-reason-john-miles/ 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 12 Author Posted March 12 (edited) The other tune from that album that I love. 'Slow Down'. Great guitar solo using that talk-box device that was all the rage in them days. So uncool, it's really cool. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/slow-down-john-miles/ Edited March 12 by Bilbo 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 13 Author Posted March 13 It was only a matter of time. I just transcribed The Royal Scam by Steely Dan only to realise that I had already done it in 2020. Ironically (or not), they are different as I counted one at half the speed of the other. 1 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 13 Author Posted March 13 (edited) Someone just clued me into Moises. Well, that's going to make a massive difference. 😎 Oh my God. Not only can I isolate the bass, I can bring it up on the mix. It's all my dreams come true!! Edited March 13 by Bilbo 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 13 Author Posted March 13 (edited) Bit more Piazolla called 'Introduccion del Angel' - this one is live. Not too testing a read but it is in Eb and there are some interesting tempo changes. The closing section is a case of listening - I assume that Piazolla was conducting. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/introduccion-del-angel-astor-piazolla/ Edited March 13 by Bilbo Quote
Bilbo Posted March 14 Author Posted March 14 Right. Here we have a tune called 'Jokoh Jokoh' from the Richard Bona/Mandekan Cubano album 'Heritage' from 2016. I would never have attempted this but this Moises software has allowed me to bring the bass way up in the mix (I could actually isolate it but that is actually harder to deal with because you have no frame of reference in terms of bar lengths and note placement etc). This means I can pick up a lot of detail that would otherwise be unfathomable. As it is, you are left with a chart that is pretty much unreadable unless you are Vinnie Colauita but, if you want to get inside Bona's groove, spend some time with the first 17 bars and you will have everything you need to groove like a king. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/jokoh-jokoh-richard-bona/ Quote
Bilbo Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 (edited) This is Ron Carter's bass part for the tune 'Sister Cheryl' from the first Wynton Marsalis album (1982). I was never able to get the details on this due to the mix and RC's slides and slurs getting lost in the mix. The Moises software allowed me to bring the bass up in the mix so I could find those details. Two things came out of my doing this transcription. The realisation that RC was born on the same date as my father (4th May) and the fact that they are both, therefore, Jedis. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/sister-cheryl-wynton-marsalis/ Edited March 15 by Bilbo Quote
dmccombe7 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Recently bought Fish first solo album Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors and State of Mind with John Giblin on bass might be a nice wee line to learn. Dave 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 (edited) Special request - the John Lodge bass part for The Moody Blues' 'Nights In White Satin' (released in 1967). A nicer line that I had expected. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/nights-in-white-satin-moody-blues/ Edited March 15 by Bilbo 2 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 Here you go, Dave - it's a great line and that delicious Giblin fretless sound. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/state-of-mind-fish/ 1 1 Quote

Gotta have a go at that altho i only have my 6 string fretless these days so that might be a bit of a struggle. When i hear John playing i just want to get another 4 string fretless. Superb playing. Many thanks for this one Rob. Dave Quote
Bilbo Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 (edited) Request from Talkbass - this is the complete Anthony Jackson performance of the tune 'Rien Ne Va Plus' from the 1975 Michael Urbaniak Funk Factory ablum. Apparently, it is famous for being stolen sampled for something by someone who didn't have any ideas of their own. 🙃 https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/rien-ne-va-plus-michael-urbaniak-funk-factory/ Edited March 15 by Bilbo Quote
Bilbo Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 Another request from the same Talkbass user and from the same Funk Factory album. The tune is called 'Watusi Dance' and it features a very young (22/23) Anthony Jackson. There is a bass solo at 2:08 that would blow most of us out of the water even now, 50 year later. What a player. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/watusi-dance-michael-urbaniak-funk-factory/ 2 Quote
dmccombe7 Posted March 16 Posted March 16 WOW Rob you seem to be working 24hrs a day on these. Take a break and go have a wee coffee. Dave 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 I haven't got much else going on, Dave, so why not use the time productively. TV is unbelievably s***. No gigs. Practice loses its appeal when you have no gigs to prepare for (I do practice reading, though - guitar and bass dots). And I read a lot of books. You would be surprised how much you can get done when you really want to. 2 2 Quote

As you say most of it is s*** anyways and maybe just read more. I have books i bought years ago that i've still not read yet. I used to only read on holiday and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm also into model railways so that takes up more of my time these days. Dave Quote
Bilbo Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 I rarely switch the TV on. Mostly only if I am cooking. I have a look to see if there is a movie on most days but there never is as it is all repeats nowadays (I don't often watch movies more than once). Transcribing is the thing I find most productive at the moment. People seem to appreciate it so it's a win win. 3 1 Quote

Such a varied list on the website too. Its an amazing collection. Dave Quote
Bilbo Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 I am quite please with this one. This is the complete Jeff Berlin performance of 'Pale Glider' from his 2001 album, 'In Harmony's Way'. There are even some parts of it that humans can play. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/pale-glider-jeff-berlin/ 2 Quote

I've just listened to the JB song you did there and it didn't sound too bad but i'm now gonna have a look at the transcription you've done and i'll be proved wrong. Dave Edit :- yep there are some very fast wee sections in there Rob. Once again i'm impressed. Dave Edited March 17 by dmccombe7 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 17 Author Posted March 17 (edited) It's actually a beautifully constructed solo. I was listening to a ' JB improvises Beethoven ' video on YouTube yesterday evening. That's really lovely, as well. I might have a crack at that too at some point. Edited March 17 by Bilbo 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 17 Author Posted March 17 (edited) Such a pretty tune, this is the complete Will Lee performance on the tune 'Tiempos Felice (Happy Times)' from the 1989 Gary Burton/Pat Metheny 'Reunion' album. There is slapping on there and I hate transcribing slapping. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/tiempos-felice-happy-times-gary-burton/ Edited March 17 by Bilbo Quote
Bilbo Posted March 18 Author Posted March 18 I can't remember what triggered this memory. The complete Geddy Lee bass part for 'Distant Early Warning' from the 1984 album, 'Grace Under Pressure'. Was that really 40 years ago?! https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/distant-early-warning-rush/ 1 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 20 Author Posted March 20 Another complete Ruben Rodriguez performance, this time on the tune 'Bait And Switch' from the 2014 Steve Khan album 'Subtext'. I can read this one at the right tempo so it can't be that hard! https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/bait-and-switch-steve-khan/ 1 Quote
