What amuses me is that these Rush bass lines were so hard when I was trying to play them (I got my first bass the year MP came out). Yesterday, I played it through off the page without any problems. I guess that's what they call progress 😀

This one is currently a bit of a train wreck with a few glitches that need attention but, for the time being, an imperfect transcription of the Mike Rutherford bass (and Taurus bass pedal) part to 'One For The Vine' from the 1976 Genesis album 'Wind and Wuthering'.

UPDDATE: this chart has been corrected and I think it is ok now.

I have finally been able to put together a passable transcription of Jeff Berlin's bass part for 'One Of A Kind: Pt.2' from the 1979 Bruford album of the same name. This means that I have transcribed all of One Of A Kind and Gradually Going Tornade and all but one track from Feels Good To Me!! This is something I would have loved to have been able to do when I had all day to practice as a teenager! There are sections where I am not 100% convinced it is absolutely correct but the notes fly past so fast it is tough to be sure of the details, even when you slow the thing down.

Joe Dart's bass part to the 'must learn' 'Dean Town' from the 2016 Vulfpeck album, 'Thrill Of The Arts'. I just wanted to transcribe something that wasn't recorded in the 1970s :) I transcribed it as 8th notes rather than the 16th note transcriptions I have seen on-line as I think it makes it easier to read. Great phrasing.

Bit of fum, this one. A transctription of one of my own solos! A single chorus of Charlie Parker's 'Yardbird Suite' (single because the solo went awry during the second solo as the band went into the B section prematurely). It is an interesting exercise to look this closely at your won work!

Enjoyed that Rob. Very relaxing

That will do nicely Rob. Look what just arrived. Your bass sounds fantastic. Love the fills. Listening to full album now. On track 3 and sounds good so far

Thanks for the feedback, Dave. I still haven't got a 'proper' copy :) I like to think that my approach was a bit different to the norm and I tried very hard not to be too 'obvious'. I only got to play on the one track.I recorded two more (Celluloid Star and 'Rebel Inside') but they wanted something more traditional than a fretless Wal and I wasn't in that space.

The bass does have a bit more of a jazz feel in a Prog band. Think your style during the fills gave it that little bit of difference from the normal and standard style bass playing. No disrespect to the other bassist who is also very talented but for my own tastes i like the bass to stand out a little.

That and the fact i do love a nice WAL sound in almost any band

A further transcription of a Jack Bruce bass part, this one being the Max Middleton penned tune 'Sweet Poison' from the 1979 Cozy Powell album, 'Over The Top'. Great bass parts featuring poweful rooted playing with some great counterpoint lines. A really influential album for me, personally. Only one more track to go ('The Loner') and I have transcribed the whole album!
