Seriously, though. Mark Egan would make sense as he was a student of Jaco's and spcialises in fretless playing; and, whatsmore, it really does sound like him. Interesting that he didn't make the internet credits I was looking at either 😃 

 

If everyone is happy, I will recredit the transcription to Mark Egan. Egan's website confirms it.

For my own amusement (as are most of my transcriptions), I have, today, finished transcribing Herbie Flowers' bass parts for the entire double album 'Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds'. 12 transcriptions. I will post them when I can but it will be a bit of a long haul so bear with..... 😉

i have done 160 transcriptions this year so which means that there are now over 200 on the website. It has had over 25,000 hits since July which is amazing. I am going to take my foot off the gas now and have a bit of a rest.

1) Including chords in a transcription is really cool because it allow the reader to understand how the bass line fits against the harmony. 2) Consider your physical layout on the page - get rid of 'electric bass / bass' at the start of each line - we know it's a bass transcription (!). Also you can use double bar lines to show different sections (which again you do on some charts) but also consider trying to set the number of bars per line to a logical amount (e.g. 4) which in turn hopefully allows you to make different sections of the song clearer (often sections are in 8 / 12 / 16 bar sections). This allows for easy navigation by the reader - sometimes I'll even note Verse / chorus etc on the chart as well. 

3) It's often useful to include a BPM or tempo marking and if you know it perhaps style and even technical notes like use of plectrum or specific bass / strings used.

4) See an attached transcription for what I'm trying to suggest above.

If you are using Sibelius you are getting ‘electric/bass’ at the start of each line because you are printing the Score rather than the Part. They will look more professional without the names at the side

I have to admit that I hadn't even noticed it until it was mentioned. I am trying to get into the habit of deleting it from the finished score but I don't always remember to do it.

I did 'Tom Sawyer' last night. Just need to proof read and convert to pdf and it is ready to post. So much easier than I thought it was at the time.

You don’t need to delete anything. Click on the + towards the right hand corner and the Bass part will come up. You can then edit the part how you wish then save to Pdf.

A supplement to the transcription of 'Sean En La Madrugada' from the 1997 Jeff Berlin CD, 'Taking Notes'. This is the second overdubbed solo that was not included in the transcription I posted in November. This is a tough one to crack. The sliding and bent notes that Jeff employs are a bit like catching smoke rings. It is important to acknowledge that this is MY transcription of the piece and is presented as I hear it. There may be disagreement in the detail,partcularly with the idiosyncracies in Jeff's phrasing.

I have started using the Parts as you have suggested, cb. I am finding out new details about Sibelius all of the time (it doesn't help that I use two versions, depending on the conputer I am using - one is an ancient Sibelius 2, the other an up to date version),. For instance, I recently found out how to change note heads on Sibelius 7 but it doesn't work on Sibelius 2. Makes ghost notes problematic if I transcribe on the old PC.

I got 163 transcriptions done this year which feels pretty satisfying. There is no way I could have done that much work if we weren't in lockdown but, with no gigs and no other distractions, it was pretty much a breeze. I usually get around an hour's practice time in a day* with some additional time every now and then. I haven't spent every second of that time transcribing and have got some bass playing practice in but this project has kept me motivated this year. The website now has just over 200 transcriptions on it and has had over 26,500 hits since I went public with it on 6th July, 2020. If every one of those hits is a downloaded transcription, then I have achieved what I set out to do and can go to my grave a happy man

Your transcriptions have certainly helped me get thru Lockdown this year plus making me a better player as i polish up on the more difficult songs you've shared.

Four days I will never get back, this is Gary WIllis's tune 'It's Only Music' from the 1998 CD 'Bent'. The ranscription features the head, chords and bass solo. A masterclass is nuance.
