Bilbo
I have been a little focussed on electric bass for a while so I thought I would post a few double bass transcriptions. This is Dave Holland's bass solo on the Jack DeJohnette tune 'Blue' from the Holland trio album he did with the drummer and saxophonist Steve Coleman in 1988, 'Triplicate'. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/blue-dave-holland-trio/
Bilbo
Another Dave Holland performance from the same album, 'Triplicate', this is the full transcription of the bass part to 'African Lullaby'. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/african-lullaby-dave-holland-trio/
Bilbo
This one came as a pleasant surprise. I learned it originally in the 1982 shortly after the album came out. I remember thinking it was a chorus effect on the bass but, coming back to it nearly 40 years later, I realised it was a three part bass harmony in which bassist Larry Klein had overdubbed three bass parts. I can't believe that I didn't notice it at the time! This is Larry K;ein's bass part for 'You Dream Flat Tires' from the 1982 Joni MItchell album, 'Wild Things Run Fast' https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/you-dream-flat-tires-joni-mitchell/ Edited January 13, 2021 by Bilbo
Bilbo
From the 1985 Dave Holland Quintet album 'Seeds Of Time', this is a full bass transcription for the tune 'Perspicuity'. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/perspicuity-dave-holland-quintet/

Not listened to a lot of Joni. Worth checking out on Amazon i reckon. thanks Dave
Bilbo
From the same 1985 Dave Holland Quintet album, 'Seeds Of Time', this transcription features the bass/percussion duet 'Walk A Way'. The piece is essentially a one bar riff of rapidly executed sixteenth notes that ends with two eight notes. It is then repeated endlessly with subtle variations - impossible to read at speed but an interesting insight into what makes the composition sound the way it does! https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/walk-a-way-dave-holland-quintet/ Edited January 14, 2021 by Bilbo
Bilbo
Something unusual today. This is a transcription of the Jerry Watts bass part for the tune 'Nostalgia' from the 1983 Eddie Jobson/Zinc album, 'The Green Album'. The transcription also contains Jobson's violin melody transcribed for bass so you can try both the bass part and the melody. Both are easy to play but it shows that you don't have to be Hadrien Feraud to play achingly beautiful music. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/nostalgia-eddie-jobson-zinc/
Bilbo
From the 2005 Dave Holland Quintet CD 'Critical Mass', this is a transcription of the bass part for the head and first (trombone) solo from the tune 'Easy Did It'. To my ears, the tune sounds like it moves between bars of 3:4 and 5:4 but, in spite of that, the tempo makes it a relatively easy read - I almost think that this would be easier to read than to play by ear, the structure is so convoluted. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/easy-did-it-dave-holland-quintet/

Bilbo
From the 2006 CD 'Out Louder' by Medeski, Martin and Wood (w. John Scofield), this is the minimalistic bass part from Chris Wood on the Beatles tune, 'Julia'. If I had recorded this and never recorded anything else, I would have gone to my grave a happy man. Bilbo
From the 1973 Greenslade album of the same name, this is Tony Reeve's bass part for the title tune, 'Bedside Manners Are Extra'. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/bedside-manners-are-extra-greenslade/ Edited January 27, 2021 by Bilbo
Bilbo
While I am in a Greenslade frame of mind, I wrote out the bass part for 'Pilgrim's Progress' from the same 1973 album, 'Bedside Manners Are Extra'. Some iteresting challenges in reading this, with three notes phrases crossing eighth note rhythms, https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/pilgrims-progress-greenslade/
Bilbo
Let's do the whole LP - This is the tune 'Sunkissed You're Not' from the same Greenslade album; Sunkissed You’re Not – Greenslade – Bilbo's Bass Bites
Bilbo
And another one - Steve Swallow's exquisite opening solo from the tune 'YOur SOng' from Pietro Tonolo's 2007 CD, 'Your SOngs: the music of Elton John' Your Song (bass solo) – Pietro Tonolo – Bilbo's Bass Bites
Bilbo
From the 1957 Paul Chambers Quartet album, 'Bass On Top', this is a full transcription, walking lines and solo, of the tune 'Dear Old Stockholm'. Some real challenges in terms of writing down the nuances of PC's phrasing. Masterful performance. Bilbo
My transcription of Jeff Berlin's part to the YouTube video he did of the tune 'Two Thoughts' with the Argentinian pianist Mariano Augustoni. I am not entirely confident of all of it as there are a couple of passages where the details are hard to identify with absoute certainty but, as a means of getting closer to sweet tlittle this performance, it's a start. Bilbo
From the 1987 Kazumi Watanabe Trio recording, 'The Spice Of Life', this is the full Jeff Berlin bass part to the track 'City'. A tough read and a tough tune to play due to the endless sixteenth groove. The solo is not for the faint hearted. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/city-kazumi-watanabe/
Bilbo
Another transcription from the most recent album fron UK Prog band Solstice, 'Sia'. Bilbo
Another tune from the Kazumi Watanabe 'The Spice of Life' album. This is the head from the tune 'Period'. Bilbo
A partial transcription from the 1976 Return To Forever album, 'Romantic Warrior' featuring Stanley Clarke. The tune is 'Dual Of The Jester And The Tyrant'. I did this one becasue I just wanted to know what was going on for the first minute or so.
