Thanks, I hadn't found that yet!

I am mainly using it to get a broad stroke mix on acoustic drums. Very nice and amazing for the price.

To be honest, I've only been demoing it for a couple of days myself. Sound aside, it is intuitive to work with and dead easy to get results quickly without too much faffing around.

I agree with your point about it being a tad too dark, but a minor gripe really.

I'm just off to spend my $20.00 and get a serial number/license.

:D

I really like the 'console emulation' feature and the fact you have three 'different but similar' preamps to work with. The compressor is also really good 'ah, that will do' settings that avoid having to add another plugin to the chain.

Ok guys, this is the bargain of bargains,  IK Multimedia SampleTank 4 for just £1 or if you fancy having the whole lot (orchestral library, pianos, synthesis, etc..) then you can pay £23.

All will go to charity which means you get a super bargain while helping a good cause.

Offer will available until October 9th, 2024.

I'm getting into VSTs for playing live (well, right now just at home practice but considering doing it live via 'Gig Performer' hosting). So I'm looking for simple stompbox emulations, low CPU  use, low latency...and ideally low cost!

So far I've found a few decent free ones that don't ask you for email address/signup spamming and have not infected my Laptop with viruses:

  • TAL have a free Juno 60 type chorus, simple and sounds great.
  • Mercuriall have decent free Tubescreamer, Chorus, and a few more guitar related things.
  • Valhalla have some excellent free reverb, echo, delays.

  • And this needs email signup: Auditory for a Phase 90/45, 10 band Graphic EQ, and 'Dr Drive', all are very good.

I feel I might be pushing my luck to do more internet digging and downloading random Zip files, so recommendations to legit stuff would be good. Any more out there that you'd recommend?

I have spent on a couple of things, Moog are doing the MF 101 for $29 (about 60% off), I've just bought that and it seems great - probably better than any multi-fx or pedal I've used for those sounds.

'Magic7 Reverb' by Wave Alchemy - It's a free VST and it's based on the Bricasti M7 reverb. Very light on CPU and sounds very good.

Magic7 | Free M7 Reverb Plugin

Thanks, just using it now and it seems great.

I'm definitely sold on the Laptop/VST for live playing at home now I've got a decent interface and powerful/reliable Laptop and have the latency down to 5ms.

Great effects like that Reverb, arguably better quality (and more adjustable) than individual pedals effects or multi-fx, and free! (And it means I'm playing through Reaper, where I have EZ Drummer to play along to drum loops, and gradually can add other aspects and build new songs rather than just practice).

Next step is I'm eyeing up 'Gig Performer 5' to take the plunge to use live.

Has anyone here got experience of the Universal Audio B15N reviews seem to highly rated it. UA have it on sale at £89 (from £149). What is confusing me though is that it looks like the exact same VST is available from Plugin Alliance for £25. Is that the exact same thing and they're undercutting the developer?

Same plugin by the same company (Brainworx).

The difference is that the UAD version can be used as a Unison preamp with UAD Apollo and works on the digital signal processing in the UAD hardware rather than your computer. Brainwork did the UAD version for the UAD hardware but UAD control the pricing.

If you don’t have UAD hardware and just want a B15 plugin just get the Plugin Alliance version.

Ah great, thanks, that now makes sense now. I I don't have that hardware so will get the Plugin Alliance version.

UAD, Moog, Plugin Alliance, Toontrack (EZ Drummer), Plugin Boutique all have big VST sales on right now.

.......although I wonder just how much of a 'sale' they really are - they just set high RRP that hardly anyone buys at so a couple of times a year there can be these '85% off' sales that look amazing but are actually just the price that they had always hoped to get.  Still though, I guess we punters need to play the game and buy now rather than wait for some non-sale time of the year.

It is a bit of a sham sales practice. UAD in particular runs sales through the year, so the full price for most of their plugins are never really charged. Plugin Alliance do the same. Frankly everyone does.

For amp sims I just bought Softube’s Amp Room and I just made the decision not use anything else for amp  sims. It is a slippery slope to spending unnecessary money.
