Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Would be interested to hear your thoughts. The only one I have recollection of playing is a vintage medium scale bass in the Stanley Clarke body style. I tried a lot of alembics when I went to their USA alembic gathering in 2012 but no idea what the rest were. Sorry I can't help more.
NikNik
I paid £600 for my s/h Series One Point back in '85. 😧
Paulhauser
A soon-to-be 22K bass (body) presented as laying on a hard cold concrete floor, that is quite something 🙂

Captain Bassman
I have a 34” long scale Series 2 and for an average build chappy it’s a slight stretch to the first fret but not too bad. I didn’t get the choice as mine wasn’t factory ordered by me but I would imagine the 32” would be quite nice and comfortable, assuming you’ve got a spare 22k sloshing around down your sofa cushions...ouch...! That is going to be a real beauty though, no doubt.
uk_lefty
When you order it and they say: "great we will ship that to you by Hermes/ Yodel/ DHL... Or we could just chuck it over a garden fence in a street roughly near you?"

At 22K, I'd be happy for it to be carried by Hermes...the Greek god Hermes, that is.
Grahambythesea
For £22k I’d like some pickups, hardware and a 5th string! Or maybe I’m just greedy.
visog
Who is going to buy this? Really who? In today's instrument market, music industry and live music scene - a £22k 'bic!? I'm sure Mark/BD know what they're doing commissioning it - presumably for a paying customer but really who? I can get a dedicated (jazz) player sinking £10g on a full spec'ed Fodera - at least you'll get 2/3 of that back in a 2nd hand sale but £22k! Mystified... NickA
NO. No Bass is worth that much money. FFS you could buy a proper 17th century DB for that kind of cash ... or a decent second hand Audi ... OK, so maybe it is worth it .... to someone who wants the bragging rights. Rather order three spanking new custom specced Wals though. jazzyvee
Surely, whether it is worth it or not depends on who is buying it. I'm confident BD have a buyer as can't imagine they would buy in a bass worth £22k bass in the hope of selling it.

Maybe for the the buyer it's a keeper and they are not concerned about selling it on in the future. 🧐
NickA
Well, I'd just assumed it was you @jazzyvee, adding to the extensive collection :¬)
Drax
It’s an extreme example but if you love it, can afford it, (and know it won’t make you a better player), then it’s worth it.

You can spec' your nuts off with Alembic or Fodera then a cheapie comes by and just lands... tone, feel and mojo. Someone is taking a big gamble with £22 kilo-dabs. Of course it will be a great bass but maybe not for the commissioner...
grenadillabama
The Series 1 caught my attention as I read the Alembic price list. It might be $10,000 or so with regular wood. How many new 'Bics are sold each year ? 100? or 1000 ? There are more than 10 models.

jazzyvee
Thinking about it i'm sure I recall on fb that Marcus is now working for Simms in marketing so maybe it was his bass and interesting for Bass direct when he was working for them but less so now. https://www.facebook.com/SimsGuitars/ Edited June 3, 2019 by jazzyvee
visog
Well it's gone! http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Alembic_basses.html £27k in the end... Don't know who to? That's over £6k a string!
three
A friend of mine went to see it and play it recently - very beautiful apparently but didn’t feel it was worth the uplift in price against his (new) Wals. I’ve owned a SI with the same body shape and point but 34” scale - I struggled with the balance but purely a personal issue. I’m sure that the new owner of the BD SII will be delighted. There appears to be a relatively small but buoyant market for top-end ‘bics Edited October 11, 2019 by three
