musicbassman Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Has anyone ever come across any other bands or players having their guitars on rigid mounts before? It looks so weird to me. Opinions? Anyway, here's the band messing around with the monstrously talented Chris Thile. Absolute all round excellence, and his movements remind me of Wilko Johnson. 1 1 Quote
Cato Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 (edited) I saw a Britpop band called Dodgy use one live years ago. The singer/bassplayer used to play the acoustic parts of some songs on a guitar attached to a stand at waist height, presumably so he didn't have to faff around with taking his bass off to swap over for those parts. casapete Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Carlos Santana had an acoustic on a stand so he could do the same IIRC. Quote
AndyTravis Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 John Frusciante used to use on for ‘Venice Queen’ Marcus Miller also uses them for a fretless think Quick-Lok make them. Quote
AndyTravis Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Although they may be using mic stands with adaptors inserted into the guitar/bass as they don’t look as cumbersome Quote
musicbassman Posted May 5, 2019 Author Posted May 5, 2019 Yes, but how are they mounted on the instruments without cutting holes in them? Do they use a converted neck plate? Quote

Well...they either do have a hole drilled in them...or some sort of clamp is mounted on the back of the guitar/bass. the quick lok ones I mentioned are more like a wall mount on a stand Quote
SICbass Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Excellent jam, thanks for posting. Loads of fun. The Wilco reference is very true. The drummer fumbles his stick without missing a beat! Quote
BigRedX Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Saw Renaissance in 1979 using stand-mounted acoustic guitars, so they could swap from electric to acoustic mid-song. Quote

chris_b Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I saw the Chick Corea Elektrik Band in the 80's and John Patitucci was playing his 6 string on the strap and slapped the 4 string which was held on the stand. Quote

I suspect that it is a gimmick but it also has the added advantage of making it slightly easier for musicians to swap instruments. I think most of them are multi-instrumentalists. 1 Quote

Bigwan Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 I saw Toto a few years back with David Hungate on bass. He played the whole set with his bass on one of those stands (I think he'd injured his back...). Quote

Couldn’t one of these be the solution for those BC members who often see an instrument and say “If that only weighed 3 lbs, my poor back“ etc? Then it wouldn’t matter if it weighed 20 lbs. Quote
