Dom in Dorset Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 The Suit , the hair, the boots, the voice...(he plays bass too) 9 Quote
Paul S Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I saw them around this time at the Kursaal in Southend when the album 'Burn' came out. One of the best gigs I've ever seen to this day. A naked woman appeared on stage seemingly from nowhere and jumped on Ritchie, who promptly unslung his guitar and played it on her backside 3 4 Quote
kevin_lindsay Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I'm off to revisit my old Deep Purple albums now - love it!!! Quote

Sorry to the purists, but “whatevs” 🤪 2 Quote
Paul S Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Have to say there was something special about David Coverdale's voice back then when he stayed in the lower registers more often, had his old nose and tilted his head back like an elephant seal. The way he sang 'Mistreated' still sends shivers down my spine. 1 Quote
fleabag Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I had the privelege of seeing that line up in the 70's at some venue or other. I blame the copious amounts of jazz cabbage back then. 1 Quote

Mk.3 and Mk.4 are always the Purple I go back to. 'Burn' must be one of my favourite rock albums. It just kicks every track - only complaint is the bass could be a little beefier in the mix! 2 Quote
Stub Mandrel Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Representing the Campaign for Real Sideburns... Why has Ritchie got bird poo all over his jacket? And that Rainbow must have given him ideas... 1 Quote
fleabag Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Gabriela Gunčíková could have joined Deep Purple She's awesome Quote
jezzaboy Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I love the song Burn but all this "voice of rock" stuff that seems to follow him around puts me right off the guy. Quote
Delberthot Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 You Keep on Moving is still one of my favourite Purple tracks Quote
Raymondo Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 Can I just pop my head in here and vote for Mr Hughes' band Trapeze? I only saw them in 1975 when (I think) they were a trio and I bought the album of the same name. Apparently their first album was called Trapeze also but I bought the later version. I remember being mightily impressed with his vocals and bass playing. For some reason I never explored their back catalogue ( I was still in the grips of my Budgie obsession then ,is my only excuse!). As you were....back to Purple.😊 1 Quote

stewblack Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Interesting how almost quaint they sound now! Metal just got a lot nastier in the following decades I suppose. I was a little young for Purple, they were big among the older kids at school but I still have a soft spot for them. Quote
Cuzzie Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Glenn can do very little wrong in my book. Didn't have the privilege of seeing Purple, but seen him tour his own songs and also classic deep purple more recently - he is still fantastic and it’s a great show - I recommend anyone even if you have a cursory nod to liking Purple to check it out - stagecraft at its best 1 Quote

bassjim Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Thats a mans bass rig that is. Proper mans bass rig. Does he near the beginning, turn round to have a cheeky turn it up one notch. Y'know....just make sure he's in the mix... 1 Quote

fretmeister Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 It's stuff like the vid that really makes me doubt my "Precisions are crap" view. To the point that I bought one a little while ago, and yesterday bought another one. I am so weak. But - need 1 for flats and 1 for rounds, surely? 1 1 Quote
Cuzzie Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 @fretmeister absolutely and the same with Jazzes as well - I prescribe to that view fully 1 Quote
ezbass Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Of course, he's still doing it and age hasn't reined him in too much either. Check out that P tone at 2:40 onwards during the guitar solo. 3 Quote
Cuzzie Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 (edited) It’s a great tone - P badass bass and Orange Tube Amp. Even better with your own ears. Its a Nash bas for anyone who wants to know, he also used a Nash Jazz for a tour a couple years ago for his album and that too sounded immense Edited May 7, 2019 by Cuzzie Quote
