Toney - that white Sei/McIntyre just looks so cool! The binding and neck shape make the whole bass look relatively short and compact - a stunning instrument and great to see it being used live

Right - finally got a few more pics of the new Jazz - still not 100% happy with them but it's the first sunny day when I've not had anything better to do (or tons of work to get through) so I hope these keep you guys going for a bit - ideally I'd like to get both of my Seis into a proper studio and take some really good shots but hey another day. I'm still loving the jazz, it's just extremely playable and besides looking amazing the range and quality of tone is just stunning.

OK - this isn't my bass (I don't think I could play it) but this is Martin's latest beast - and a true example of just how extraordinarily skilled he and Jon are at making instruments - this is a world-class piece of work and while it's not to my personal taste in terms of practical, everyday bass playing - this really is jaw-droppingly stunning:

Ah, the Sei 9

Really excited to see this at last. The owner's a good egg and I know he's having a lot of fun getting used to the 9. Mind you, he has got a Sei 8 fretless as well, so not a massive step in terms of string number.

I think it's tuned B E A D G C F Bb Eb instead of from the low F# as with my 9. As ever, there's no rules on this kind of thing, just personal preference.

That is just mega. Nice to see it finished (I've spent many a minute checking it out in the workshop). I wonder what Robbie (Rim) has to say about that fishtail though?

It's always a very personal and subjective view with such extreme basses as the nine string above, and I can't say I'm a massive fan of the design or aesthetic. However, I'm filled with admiration for the technical skill and artistry that has been applied in the construction of the bass. For me, it serves to prove that Martin is one of the very best builders in the world - his work just seems to keep on getting better (a testament to his talent and dedication).

A new arrival - a Single Cut Series II with the same spalted maple as my Sei Jazz - I've tried this one out and it's just lovely - I think the fingerboard is snake wood, which gives it a slightly mellower tone than ebony:

Question:

I now have two Sei 5's.

One is a Flam with Bart hum pups and a shack pre and the other is a J5 with singles and a John East Retro. haven't worked out what pups they are yet...!!
I love the sound of the Jazz with the retro firing on all cylinders but haven't got to grips with using both basses on the same rig.
I don't think I will want to dial down the John East boost so might have to mod/change the Shack pre as even though it has +15db, that isn't a useable tone, as too much bass..
Not sure which way to go ..but as it stands I can't see me being able to use both basses on a gig...which is what I wanted to do.
The Jazz John East is SO much louder on boost and this is the sound I love in the mix...

What pre's will slot straight into the Flam..I have 5 controls, a volume, a pick-up pan and 3 band EQ. I also have 2 switches for individual coil taps.

or do I sell one and go for another Jazz5 with the same sort of pre config..

As much as I like the Jazz5 it just isn't compatible with the Flam as it stands and that is not something I realised when I bought the Jazz.

I will have fun messing round with the Shack pre.. AGAIN.. but I have only just got it setlled in nicely a few months ago...

Trial and error for me, for a few months, I feel...

Some new pics of my Sei 7.

After replacing the pickup and the electronics I had to get some new knobs. Q-Parts [url="http://www.q-parts.com"]www.q-parts.com[/url] have some lovely stuff and I went for their gold, domed knobs topped with purple acrylic.

So, not that I needed much convincing that a Sei Jazz is my ideal dream bass after reading through this thread, but two things have made my GAS worse recently. The first was the article in Bass Guitar Magazine which I think I read about 5 times and the second was me mooching around on the Gallery and Sei websites earlier where I saw two stunning examples of their work.

I hope nobody minds me posting these, neither are mine unfortunately but I had to share, I could look at these things for hours. I just need to sell some gear to buy one for myself now.

All 3 Sei's are 5's, I'm afraid...

I did post the Flam5 a while back but wasn't happy with the shots. I will get round to shooting the Sei's and will post here and the twins section

I know that thread far too well I love these basses so very much, trying at the moment to get some funds together for a second hand Jazz 5. I would love a custom built one day but a bit out of my price bracket at the moment. For now a second hand jazz would be more than enough to keep me happy.

I ordered my next Sei a couple of weekends ago. It's going to be a 5-string Jazz, with a lightweight ash body, maple neck with ebony 24-fret fingerboard and block inlays, a very pretty spalted maple top, black hardware, Nordstrand MM3.1 pickups and a John East circuit (with the EQ curves set up to match a Music Man).

It is going to cost a pretty penny, but Martin's lead time is currently about 12-14 months, so that's plenty of time to save up. He's also got my singlecut 5 in there at the moment for a tune-up and active circuit replacement. Seriously, you can't go wrong with a Sei.

Sei's are great used buys and pretty reasonable too considering.

Oh very very jealous, I was dreaming about my very own custom build the other night and was deliberating whether I would have Maple or Ebony board. Ebony with blocks is going to look so sharp. There is actually a used fretted 5 Sei Jazz with ebony board at the Gallery at the moment and I look at it every day.

There are a couple of used Sei Jazzes at the Gallery now and they are very well priced. I am seriously tempted by two of them. I have had quite a few basses over the years but ever since I picked up Bassist magazine 10 years ago when I started playing and saw a Sei Jazz in an advert I knew that was the bass for me. I need to do something about getting one soon.
