I actually had a chat with Martin about this yesterday and the principal reason he stopped inserting the brass placque was becuase of the chemicals used to manufacture it were really not very nice.

I don't think he holds detailed records of every bass because of the individuality.

From memort the Original is something like #11 or #18 so it's a very early one. My new Flam is #60 so still early(ish).
:) he likes you to send in detail so he has some sort of records...but paperwork ..well..there are always more basses to build.

I have an Flam5 headed 007 which I had built in '93 and has the headstock plaque.

There's a fair few of the early Seis around. I think I've heard of at least 3 of the first 10 going back to when Martin was building them at home (apparently).

Like all the other owners, I really am proud to have a Sei. It's like having a fine Saville Row suit (and no I don't have one of those but I was struggling for an analogy :)).

Difficult to know.

When I first went to see him he was working from Queens Park.
He was mostly making headless Originals but headless Flamboyants had started to be built.
I wanted headed and we talked about what the design should be..I think he had made a 6 string and had an idea
of the headstock he wanted. He always had very good ideas on design and he could always make the build work.
His attention to detail was evident and his ability to make the little things just perfect and add upto to big things was also there.
His build time then was 3-4 months ( I think ) but he couldn't make anymore than 30 basses a year on his own...maybe not even that number.

He had studied his competition or contempories and knew where he fitted in this scheme even as a relatively new name.
He talked them about making a superjazz...but I never saw one. we did discuss the headstock of that as well.
He is receptive of ideas and when he decides on the final design, you know it will work.
The biggest variable I thought was, how do woods react if you were getting out of tried and trusted versions.
At the time Wenge and Bubinga were the norm..but I went for various maples and bubinga which for me was a bit of an unknown.
Active elecs take some of the sting out of this.
You only had to compare what he was doing to what else was out there at the time and you bought into it.
He also had quite a few name clients at the time with builds in progress.

Towards the end of my build he had moved into Camden and had taken on another pr of hands as a luthier.
The shop was up and running so the final laquer and stuff was done there.

I do recall Martin saying that he ought to make a DataB of the things he had done but it was job that would take up a lot of time.

If you have a problem with a bass and need to know history..then they can easily ID it, as happened with one of mine, so they know and obviously recall your bass.... if you jog their memory.

I think their work and attention to detail is fantastic and they will build you a superb bass.
It is way more than a block of wood which is why I have 3 ...

You could say I am a fan..

Hey Sei Bass enthusiasts!
After buying a rather magnificent Jazz 5 second hand from the gallery a few months ago I was wondering if anyone had any idea about its backstory.
All I could gather from the guys at the Gallery is that is was probably from around 2004/2005 or mabye later. Here's some specs to jog people's memories.
Sei Jazz 5
Maple Body
Birdseye Maple Neck and Fingerboard.
Ambonia facing
Aguilar ODP-1 preamp
Blue Side LEDs

Here are some pics. Sorry about the quality, the only camera I have is my Blackberry.

Oh yes I recognise that one well.

It was between that one and a very similar Sei Jazz 5 (at the gallery) that I eventually bought. It's a really lovely bass and was actually the one I intended to buy but there was just something about the one I bought sound-wise that suited me a little more.

I believe yours may have been for sale on BC last year (but I could be wrong) check out http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=61546 - I haven't compared the pics precisely on both threads I'll leave that one to you :). If it is that one maybe AndyW can help you with further info.

EDIT: spelling mistakes

The body looks more like ash than maple.
The birdseye on the neck looks lovely though.
Nice bass!

Played that the other day; sounds awesome.

BTW, that buckeye Sei a page or 2 back is unreal!

Thanks for the info. The Sei in the link you sent me is unquestionably my bass. I'll definitely be in contact with AndyW to find out out a bit more about it.

Thanks,
The pics aren't the best and the colouring is a bit off.
The white one is more of vintage white but I am pleased about the scratch plates. They weren't cheap but
were worth the money.

I am looking to find my sei jazz again...

it was (sadly one of the only basses I've EVER regret selling)

5 string
ash body
maple neck
rosewood finger board
jazz retro deluxe east
bart' pick ups
RED scratch place
ebony ramp

I will offer a trade plus a bit of cash to get it:

My amazing looking sei six strings (pics on request) 33 scale... blues leds, flame maple facings... etc

If ANYONE has my bass and is interested... pls shoot me a message...

If anyone happens to want to get rid of a sei jazz with the specs close to these... please let me know :-), and too be honnest, I'd be interested in ANY 5 string sei bass I think :-p as long as it's got a head... :-p

My personal email is on my profile...:-)

I'd be very very glad to hear from any of you, on the where abouts of my sei jazz :-)
or some one with a sei jazz gathering dust... (i know it doesn't happen very often... :-p)
cheers....

I'd love to see some more pics of that Sei singlecut! I've played a few Sei jazz basses before but couldn't imagine trading that singlecut sixer for one! But then again, all of Martin's creations are something a bit special.

Easy,

Jay.
I believe that very Sei Jazz bass that you are looking for is currently having work done on it at Bernie Goodfellow's basement... and I believe it may be for sale as the current owner has just bought a Spitfire... It may be worth giving him a call.
can you tell me a little about your sei 6's controls and electronics?
i'm really digging the 3-knob config. :)
its just
volume ,
then stacked pick up blend and mid sweep,
then stacked bass treble,
swicthes for the pick ups, serial single coil parelle i think.
took it into the gallery for the shack to b put in and martin suggested the 3 knobs
as to not drill two more holes in the lovely facing.

nice its my favourite bass , im not a six string player but i love the bass anyways!!!!!
kindest regards
ziggy.

Thanks Ziggy.

My bass had a silver/grey pearl plate and black hardwear.
I am pretty sure the pre is John East and the EQ on this is massive, thunderous and would chop down trees. :)
Kind of like a Stringray but far more manageable and subtle, IMO.
I have heard that description from one or two bass players about the sound out front. My problem is to tone it down a tad
which is quite easy to do even though the bass control is boost only, I think.
It has a quilted facing on the front and looks the business.
I believe the pups are KA in singles.
This is my go-to bass as it is so easy to set up for a gig..

Not selling atm...altho am still thinking about letting the Flam5 go..but I have been saying that for a year. :)
